Mission Statements

Published

Whenever I visit a new medical facility, I always like to read the mission statements. They sound great. Do you believe that the mission statements where you work are true / upheld. And the core values? Or do you just see it as propaganda?

"Mission Statements" mean absolutely nothing.....

I'm thinking they're some type of requirement for accreditation, perhaps? :jester:

I feel that mission statements are an idealistic statement on what the facility strives to acheive. However I do feel that if the facility honestly wants to acheive these goals, they need to support staff. They can't overload their staff with demands, they have to fair nurse patient staffing ratios, they need to be realistic and understand that one Nurse can not possibly attend to every whim of 6 or seven patients.

A mission statement is a formal, short, written statement of the purpose of a company or organization. The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goals. Just hope all th hospital live up with their mission statement.

It's just marketing (I would know). Remember always, it's all for the money honey. PR/Marketing is hired to write something that sounds like corporate cares.

I've worked a few places with mission statements posted every where.

They're a bunch of bunk.

There may be one or two new businesses out there that are idealistic and actually believe their mission statement. However, if you read the mission statement, a lot of the principles are usually counter to actual business practice.

I honestly think management comes up with them so they have a piece of paper to point to when you want a raise and they can say, "Well, you don't do this, this, or this so no raise for you!" Even though no one else in the company does it either, and the manager him/herself does the opposite of what the mission statement says.

I feel like our mission statement is geniune. There are many times when they look at policies that admins go back to the mission statement and try to make the best decision based on what our mission is. Then again- I'm in a small town where the hospital is very much supported by the community.

Mission statements and Vision statements were the latest corporate fad when they came out in the 1990's.

Fads like these come and go.

Hourly rounding and scripting are currently in vogue, (not that I ever complied with scripting).

If I need a good laugh I'll read it.. all "we" care about is making the family happy, even at the expense of the patient and the facilities care giver. We will stomp on any nurse whom stands up to be a patient advocate whom can't speak for themselves when a family member want's a blanket and a coke...

we will code you with advanced directives, when your family demands so and slap the nurse for questioning it.... we will slap the nurse that puts the ill patient with none to speak out for them above the pillow and coke needing family..

we only care about a score card... and if you are and advocate... you will need to leave before we push you out for having the guts to question traching and pegging a 101 patient and calling a worthless ethic committee on a surgeon whom jumped on the billing.

So yeah... just ask me about a mission statement... and I'll tell you what really happens.... It's tough to sleep, live and show up the next day. But don't dare call in... because you're only allotted three and you'll have to even make up one of those three in punishment to teach you a lesson...

mission statement.....

"family and patients can do as they please, the priority is that we screw our nurses and wonder why the quit"

that is MY mission statement... enough said.

I guess I am so naive, I had always wanted to believe in them. Then became so disheartened when I found they are not real or followed. Now I just take them for what they are Propaganda. Thank you for all the responses that let me know I am just not over cynical.

I believe that my hospital believes in its mission statement, but can't possible live up to it given the economy and current re-imbursement policies. They are simply not paid for the care they give and can't provide the level of service they would like. So take a mission statement with a grain of salt. ;)
