minimum passing grade

Hello nursing students and fellow faculty members,

I am hoping you will share two pieces of information for an informal survey.

1. What is the minimum grade (percentage) in your program to pass?

2. What type of program is it? BSN, ADN or Diploma

THANKS! Donna

I already graduated from NS but I was in an ADN program and our lowest passing grade was 80% (or the lowest C). which only meant you could miss 10 questions on our 50 question test to pass....it was tough!!

The school I attend is a BSN program. The school has a 75% required test average established.

BSN program, minimum passing grade was 80%.

ASN...76% on tests to pass, No other assignments were counted. You have to pass the tests and then you get points for your assignments...But in the end they were worth practically nothing.

Graduated from an ADN program: 80%, plus had to satisfactory complete clinicals (which weren't graded--they were pass/fail. So even if you had a 100% on the coursework/tests but failed clinicals, you failed the class regardless)

Currently in a BSN program: 78%, and same thing about the clinicals

It always makes me a bit sad that so many people focus on these types of meaningless numbers. Whether the minimum passing grade is 50% or 90% makes not difference as to whether the program is "easy" or "hard." The faculy construct the tests and assignments so that they yield the desired scores needed to determine who moves on and who doesn't.

In other words, a school with a low minimum passing score may have tests that are are more difficut than a school with a high minimum passing score. The actual numbers cannot be meaningfully compared from one school to another.

We have to start somewhere looking for the norm in order to consider change.... Similiar to the vast number of other minimal passing scores in our lives (e.g. NCLEX, highschool diploma requirments, driver's license exam, SAT, I could go on and on). Did not mean to make anyone sad over this informal survey. Thanks, Donna

Why do you think anything related to that issue needs to be changed? Maybe your discussion should start there if you want it to be meaningful. Focus on the real issues that dissatisfy you rather than focus on a meaningless stat related to the scoring system used to measure academic accomplishment.
