May 2010 Grads - When are you applying for jobs?

I am graduating in May also, and I have already spoken to some nurse recruiters in the area where I want to work. They advised me to start doing the online applications in mid December so that you can start interviewing in the beginning of 2010...I hope this helps...Good Luck!

I have been working through school for the last 1.5 years in a hospital. I just got an externship in a hospital that I really wanted to be at. I am hoping my experience and grades transfer into a job.

I am going to start applying during the christmas break, in the mean time I am going to try to do an externship that will hopefully lead to a RN position.

Hey there. I just wanted to recommend that you look online at several hospitals that you are interested in, every single day that you can. I know it may sound extreme, but I am a May 2009 grad, and I cannot find a job. I applied to at least 31 positions (not specifically for a new grad). I planned on working as an RN at the hospital I was already working at through nursing school as a CNA, assuming that I would never have trouble because of this "nursing shortage." Believe me, it was a big mistake. They did not accept any new grads, and I missed out on the new grad opportunities at the other hospitals in Maryland. Also plan on having backup plans too, considering hospitals that you may not have orginally considered if you could easily have your dream job. I wish you the best of luck getting hired into your first choice, but it never hurts to have alternatives. Good luck class of 2010!

At UVA Medical Center, they recommend that May grads interested in high-demand units (all ICUs, ED, peds, L&D) to apply by Christmas. Interviews start on January 2, and decision letters are sent 2 weeks after the interview. This past year new grad positions for these "high demand units" were filled by the end of February. All positions were filled by the end of March for May & August grads.

MissBrittanyRN, am I understanding you correctly, the hospital you worked @ as a CNA didn't hire you after graduation as a RN? If that is the case I am very sorry to hear that, I probably would have placed all of my eggs in one basket also if I was already working there & that was my first choice hospital. Best of luck to u

Yes ma'am that is correct. I had an excellent employment record with them, nominated for awards, etc. As personal as it felt, they did not take any new grads. Thank you, I try to stay optimistic.

Are you currently still employed there? Hopefully they will be hiring new grads soon, when they do u will be first in line.

I talked to the nurse recruiter at the local children's hospital where I want to work and she told me the new grad positions won't even be posted til March but to apply as soon as March rolls around.

Fingers crossed. I just started a Student Tech position in Peds Hem/Onc and love it... hope that will help me out.
