lost and in need

I am a nursing graduate, worked as an RN in UK and loving it. I recenty moved here in CA to start a new life as a family woman. With all the not so good scenarios about my new found family, i needed to help my husband to earn money and try to make both ends meet. i recently tried taking nclex but wasnt so fortunate. altho the result hasnt been released yet, i am not really that positive about the result but still hopeful tho.

anyways, i have been trying to look for a job. and i finally realized that it is difficult to find a job with my present qualification (non RN, not either a CNA). I have been submitting resumes, caling agencies and hospital, engine searches on the net and even home health care/nursing homes for any job available with no luck at all.i find it so frustrating. Local stores doesnt wanna employ me either i am over qualified or i need to speak spanish as a 2nd language. i dont know what to do anymore. i am in deep need of job. i just felt i wanna cry now. as much as i wanna be certified on a certain field, i just dont have enough resources financially to do it. pls advise...even if i have been here in US for over a year now, i still consider myself new here since the 1st year is spent with buiding my famiy together and sorting husband's familial problems... we finally won his brother's guardianship and now it is my turn to have a job of my own. and really dont know my options.what is the available job for a nursing graduate(non RN)?..thanks

You don't have the NCLEX result yet? You should have them soon, I would suggest waiting until you get the result before getting a job. You don't want to get a job and start it and have to quit a week later because you passed and got your license.

If that's not feasible, if you need a job now, what about the food industry? I know several nurses who, when they were unable to work as RNs for a while, worked as restaurant wait staff and made pretty good money.

I wish I could help more. Good luck.

I go with Tazzi, wait for the results if you can, if not, look for a good, popular restaurant in your area, tips can great! Daily money, wo-hoo! Thats how I got though school. Hopefully you passed your NCLEX and this is needless worrying!

Hi Leilah, Sorry you're going through this. At my hospital we have an RN from Australia who is waiting for the BRN to clear her to take boards (the process has taken nearly a year!!) and she's working as an ER tech. Hope everything works out for you, it's tough in the beginning, I moved to CA over 18 years ago from the UK and it was quite an adjustment, but I love it and this is now my home.

Good luck, Celia:welcome:

hi Leilah - just to say that I hope things move along okay for you

thanks so much guys. i have been looking around here in my place here to work but they really prefer bilingual english spanish people which is really sad. i can speak 3 languages but not spanish wahhhh...anyways, i hope i pass. i had 265 on my nclex. we will see what will happen next. if i get lucky, it would be great, it will greatly help my family. if not, i need to weigh some options. My aunt actually told me to move with her in florida. cuz she said with my qualifications i can work as a graduate nurse while preparing for my nursing exam. i wish it ill be just as easy as going from one st to another...but i have a family to think about and our lives are based in CA.(thinking about custody issues and court approval for my young bro-in law before moving out of the state) no more, no less:((

The number of questions does not determine the pass/fail status. And many more people than you thought they could not have possibly passed and they did. I was one.

Gee, I thought the NCLEX told you right away whether you passed or not.

OP - Can you work as a companion? A lot of people need help to wash, dress, eat, get to appointments, shop, etc., maybe you could do this for someone, either via an agency or run some ads yourself. I don't know if you need a license of some kind or not but you can check with the California state Board of Consumer Affairs or something like that to find out.

There is a huge Filipino population in California. Can you talk with some of your country men and women and get some leads?

Could you run a Board and Care? Not sure if you have to be an RN or what but a lot of Filipino nurses there do that.

I know you will do ok. Where there is a will, there's a way.

Also - Tagalog is based on Spanish, isn't it?

thanks trudy RN. tagalog is roughly 5% spanish unless if you are from Zamboanga Area wherein their dialect is already broken spanish (almost 70% or so)Philippines has lots of different dialects like tagalog, visaya, ilocano, panggalatok:), and lot more. most of the agency here in CA prefers licensed personnel. CNA, LVN,LPN,RN etc... I already asked people, called agencies and al of them said the same. one agency this morning said, i should look for private jobs. they cannot hire people without records from US based client. i will try and try and try....and never give up. thanks so much...who knows i will be able to nail nclex hehehe we will see:)

Have you spoken to the recruiters at the hospitals?

Specializes in Neuro Surgery,telemetry.

yes. i spoke to them couple of times different areas...and to the 2 major hospital in here and they turned me down. they expressed interest at first but when they see my resume, the always ask me to pursue nursing and pass nclex. frustrating really. they all say i am over qualified.it is good really and drives me to never quit with nclex but i really need the job whatever it is...sigh...

one recruiter told me which area i wanna work i said OR and she said since i dont have experience in OR she will put me in surgery for a year to train in OR. i said i am not applying for nursing job because i am not yet qualified. she said when i qualify give her a ring. i told her, i need the job right now ma'am. it will help me review and learn more plus it will help me financially for the test prep. and she kept on insisting nursing...then i asked her are you going to hire me ma'am as a NA? (am i bad asking her that?) she said oh dear, you are over quaified for that and under qualified to become RN. sigh again:)
