Labcoat?

I know we can, but so many other departments like Respiratory, infusion, x-ray/MRI, and MD's wear them. So I choose not to.

Plus, I have this little thing about the 'white coat syndrome'. I still see wayyyyyyy to many patients that feel intimidated by a white coat and assume that person is a MD. I want people to feel open to discuss issues with me and not feel that I am studying them (even though I am..LOL!). I feel scrubs do that nicely.

I don't know..that is just my experience and something that bothers me a bit. I felt that way since RN school where I had to wear one, and one facility thought I was a psych intern by accident! I got an excellent review as one though! LOL!!!!!!! (I am seirous, they thought I was an intern! They gave me a review and everything!).

In nursing school we were required to purchase a lab coat, I wore mine all the time!!

And please don't apologize for your typo, I have them all the time. I guess some people have nothing better to do than pick apart someone's spelling...such is life.

Yes, a lab coat can make one look more professional. Since your concern seems to be wearing one at school, I would check with the instructors or the director of the nursing school to find out when a lab coat is expected to be worn. When we go to get our clinical assignments, we are expected to be dressed as we would for church and wear a white lab coat.

Don't know if this helps to answer your question...but I am saying that there are times when it is appropriate and necessary and times when it is not necessary. I'm not sure when you are thinking about wearing a lab coat, there may be schools that require one all of the time. Just ask!

If you plan on getting it ruined and want to buy a couple and wash frequently...uniform city has quite a few good ones for cheep prices! I got mine there for nursing school, and used only one...worked just fine!!!!!!!!

Believe it or not but the Walmart in my town has some great looking scrubs and labcoats, affordable and durable too!

There's no reason why you shouldn't.

However, most nurses I've seen do it were sort of pretentious. One guy in particular springs to mind and you couldn't tell some of the old ladies we had as patients that he wasn't a doctor. Some weren't pretentious though and I think it was more of a style issue for them, I think they just wanted to look tidy.

Good question. I'm in nursing school, but I work as a nurse extern also. I want to wear a labcoat because I'm always cold, and I think they look neater than the scrub jackets. I don't, however, because I don't want people to think I'm trying to look like a doctor. So I just wear the scrub jacket.
