Can an instructor do this???

When I was in school they changed one of the clinical groups from 3p-9p to 7a-1p the evening before it started.

My nursing school pulled this kind of crap all the time....last minute time changes power plays, etc. Unfortunately, I don't know how to change to system unless you're part of it. It's likely the dean would have backed the instructor anyway. I don't know what you could have done. I believe nursing schools sometimes (can't say always, I don't know) try to initiate students by being as difficult and b****y as possible. It's like, we suffered, so now you will, too. No flame from me - I agree 100%! Their attitude seems to be that they own you and school is they ONLY thing of importance. Either you play the game by their rules (subject to change at a moment's notice) or you're out.

exactly...but you have to play by the rules. It tests your committment...but life doesn't always work 9-5. even work, sometimes something may happen and you may still be charting when it's time to go.

Can they do it? Absolutely. They can get away with anything.

Why? Because nursing instructors are in high demand. And a school without instructors, is a school out of business. In the past 18 months I have personally witnessed three students forced to leave school when they went to our school's administration about abuse by a nursing instructor. One of those students was a former attorney who pushed it all the way to the Dean of the school (and she laughed at him).

So keep your head down, and your eyes on the prize (the RN).

Last semester the class ahead of us had a similiar situation BUT WORSE!!! We test using laptops on a secure lockdown browser and WiFi... well, long story short, the test was scheduled at 10:00am and half the class were there until 4pm for what was suppose to me a 1 hr test! Horrible. After 2hrs of messing with the computers the instructor decided to have paper copies of the test printed up. The problem with that was that we are on a new campus that has "gone green"... not really anywhere to print things up... talk about about being stressed for a final!

It's been 4 months since I finished NS..thankfully..and while I wouldn't wish it on anyone, it's nice to know my program wasn't the only one that pulled this kind of nonsense. Some days it truly felt like survival of the fittest, like a test of how far we really would go as students and how much we would put up with.. I learned early on to kiss a lot of bottoms and say good-bye to my pride for the most part :) the good instructors who truly care are out there.. put up with the rest and get out of there with your degree- just remember how badly you want this and don't let miserable people get in the way of your dream.

I agree that when a test is given and you can leave after the test is completed, that is a bonus. Why would anyone schedule an interview on a class day--even if it is to take a test? Some schools never allow students to leave early, no matter what the reason. Problems happen and we all have to learn to adjust when they do!

What are you going to do when you are working as a nurse and the rules change from one shift to another (and it does happen)? Flexibility is a key in nursing.

Technical difficulties never happen at opportune times. I feel for the instructor and the students!

Ever have to request more time to post a discussion or hand in a paper d/t slow computer or down services? Happens all the time.

Sorry for your frustration!

I know you want to speak out when you are upset but you will just make yourself a BIG target. Not worth it when they can essentially pass or fail you.

It really is frustrating how it's so accepted that nursing schools treat their students like crap. I feel like it just plays into the whole young eating thing.
