I'm FREAKING OUT. Pls help!!!!! My nursing intructors are Drill Sergeants

Yes, they probably will recognize the importance of getting your citizenship, but no, the will most likely NOT let you off the hook with those assignments.

Now, it could just be scare tactics. But........we had a similar situation where one students mother died and they did not let her off the hook. They think it is all part of the learning process. You are learning to be professional and "pay the price" when you can't meet your obligations.........for whatever reason.

But, don't fret until you know. Lord knows there are plenty of other things to fret about...

Just starting my second year in the RN program, and we have new instructors.

Today, they told us about clinical make-ups and it's pretty ugly:

1 Day Med-Surg

a. Case study and presentation to your clinical group

b. Computer program (6hrs long)

c. Look up articles in nursing journals and complete 5 CEUs worth of tests.Give copy of articles and tests to faculty.

2 Days Med-Surg( x2)

a. Case study and presentation to your clinical group

b. Computer program (6hrs long)

I've never missed a day of clinical. But this semester, I have to because I'm scheduled for my citizenship interview on a clinical day.

Guys, I need your help, what am I to do?? They've already told us that no matter the excuse, we will need to do a make-up, but as you can see the make-ups are no joke!!!! I don't want to any make-ups. As some of you know, the nursing curriculum is crazy. Do I try to reschedule my interview even if they preferred I not. Will my instructors recognize the importance of getting one's citizenship and let me off the hook. Pls help!!!

I would talk to your instructors as soon as possible. Explain to them the reason that you will have to miss class and offer to bring in documentation.Maybe they will forgive you from class since getting your citizenship is very important. If they won't forgive you maybe they will give you a lighter make-up assignment. The only thing that you can do is talk to them or push come to shove you could try to reschedule you appointment if you can. Good Luck.

Boy, I wouldn't try to re-schedule with INS---they're tougher than nursing instructors :). Since you know you have to do the make-up, could you start now? With spreading the work out, it might not be too bad. Good luck!

I would start working on it now! I know it totally stinks, but if they are really strict on their policy then it's best just to do the work. At least they have given you enough warning to prepare for it. If you work on it a little bit each day, maybe it won't be such a chore? Good luck, no matter what happens!

regarding missing clinicals. If they did not have such a policy, people would be missing clinicals left and right for lots of "good" reasons. The school certifies that you have had a certain number of clinical training hours every semester and this plays into their certification. It is not their policy as much as it is State mandated.

If you can not reschedule with INS, then start working...

Can you relate the case study to your nursing articles? Can you choose your study? Not sure about the computer program...sounds rough. I hope you can do that over more than 1 day! Articles aren't so bad...I bet you read more than 5 articles from Nursing2005 or RN anyway in a semester? Does it matter what the topic is? Good luck!

Thanks everyone for taking out the time to reply. I'm going have to agree with Hikernurse. I feel exactly the same way about the INS. I'd rather not reschedule. I will just have to start working on the make-ups now like lisamc1 suggested, added to the quantamillion things that I already have to do :angryfire :angryfire . Why does nursing school have to be so hard??????

Well, I still have my fingers crossed. I sent an email to my clinical instructor explaining my situation and I also attached a copy of the apt. letter I recieved from the INS.

Whatever she decides, I will just have to deal with it. I'm not going to jeopardize my chances of becoming a citizen because of nursing school.

Nursing school has to be hard because we hold peoples lives in our hands. schools have to make strict rules regarding missing clinicals because otherwise students would be gone all the time. like someone above posted ......professionalism.....

Hey Y'all

Both my sisters are AdvDegree Nurses and have taught ADN coorifices. They know that there is a sub-set of Instructors that make tormenting students a hobby. They told me when I had this kind of complaint: Just be glad they're not working in a hospital tormenting sick people!!

Clinical make-ups should be the equivalent of a clinical day and its preparatory work.

Actually, I think the make-ups you described sound appropriate.
