I'm getting ready to start school, and nursing is one of the things I was considering. How did everyone here decide its what they wanted to do?
For anyone who is a nurse, is it what you thought it would be?

For me I've always loved the medical field and have been drawn to nursing for as long as i could remember. I like helping people and comforting them. I thought about being a doctor for about a second but the length of school, the cost of school, malpractice insurance, not spending as much hands on time with the patients among other things turned me off. I like the amount of contact that the nurses have with their patients. Depending on the setting they really get to know them and their families. Looking back at having my children, it was the nurses that I remember the most. They were amazing and did an awesome job caring for me and my children.
There are too many reasons to list but what it comes down to is I can't see myself doing anything else. I'm going to be a nurse

I'm not a nurse (yet) and can't tell you or even myself whether it will be all that I imagine it to be, but I can tell you why I'm in love with the idea of becoming a nurse.
Honestly, it's probably the same reasons as just about everyone else around here. :) I, too, am fascinated by the medical field. Growing up, my favorite game was playing nurse. Those toy stethoscopes and needles weren't good enough for me. I wanted the real stuff. My aunt would take the needles out of her unused syringes (she was diabetic) and give them to me to pretend to give shots to my friends.
Of course there's more to nursing than just giving shots and checking pulses. As I got older, I found myself drawn to the inter workings of the human body. In high school, I thought I'd take A+P for fun. I found myself glued to the text book hanging on every word. I was in love.
One night I had to go to the emergency room. While laying in the hospital bed in a morphined state, doctors and nurses rushed in and out of the room. The doctor was rude and cold. The one person that truely listened to me was the nurse. That's when I decided I wanted to be a nurse.
Hopefully all goes well and I achieve my dream. Hopefully one day I'll be running around the hospital tending to patients. :)

Not a nurse yet but it became a passion from working around them. I love the warmth I felt when they came around. It ties me more closer to god because I get to witness more of his miracles when things go wrong. I get to see how life comes in goes in others lives and not just my own family and friends. People really trust you more when you take care of them. I found out alot of this from being a medical assistant. When I watch tv, I always want to watch grey's anatomy or E.R. I love what people can do to help save a life!!!!!! I'm awaiting right now on my acceptance letter into the program. I have worked hard to get there and still will continue to. If it's your passion then it's your vision and if it's your vision then it's your destiny. Go for it.

Like a lot of people, I've always been interested in the medical field. I initially thought about medical school and my whole family kept pushing me towards it. But the more I tried to go that direction it just didn't click and I didn't feel 100% about it. I had a lot of friends whose mothers were nurses, and they told me I should become a CNA first to see if I really wanted to go into nursing and I'm very thankful I did. Once I became a CNA in 2008 I just knew nursing was the field I wanted to be in. Some people tried to discourage me from becoming a CNA because of the type of work I did, but I actually enjoyed it and still do. This fall I will start the BSN program and although it'll take hard work and dedication, this is what I want.

I don't think I ever "knew". Especially not in the begining of the process of taking prereqs. For me, I'd toyed with the idea as a highschool student, decided to major in Biology instead so that I could go to med school. Then I stopped attending the University to raise my children.
I thought about nursing over the years but wasn't ready to commit.
Finally, when I was 29, and my kids were 4, 10 and 14, I decided it was time for me to "do me". I just decided I hae the right to pursue my passion and my interest and nursing/medical was an area of extreme interest to me. I got to a point where I decided that I wasn't gong to let anyone else stop me. I realized if I didn't pursue my dream, it would be my own fault.
So I went for it! Hopefully I'll apply to nursing school this fall.
As far as it being what I thought, though I'm not a nurse, I have had the opportunity to work in a hospital alongside nurses (as a CNA) and what they do is NOTHING like what I thought a nurse did. But, I still want to become one. And I will.

I liked Science in High School and wanted to be a chemist. Then I wanted to be a physician when I started college because I wanted to be around people. I toyed around with Paramedic and Health Care Administration until I started volunteering in a hospital and saw the many things RNs did in different departments. After that I started taking pre-reqs and once I finished, I applied to programs. I started my job as an ER Tech in January of 2010 after applying to an ADN program and this only confirmed that I belong in the field. After a few bumps in the road (getting denied to a few BSN programs and getting my application withdraw from said ADN program for not taking the updated of the TEAS V in time) I'll be attending a local BSN program in the Fall! 3 years and I'll be an RN (If all goes as planned)

My discovery was very roundabout. When I was a kid, I loved the idea of being a nurse or a doctor. I was a huge animal lover though, so I went up to the beginning of high school thinking I wanted to be a vet. In high school, I got bitten by the theatre bug and since my grades weren't so hot, I figured I'd never get into a veterinary program and pursued acting instead. I loved it in high school and majored in it in college. However, it only took about a year and a half in my college program to realize I didn't want to major in it anymore- I just didn't know what else I wanted to do and I didn't think I had any other skills. So, I graduated with my BA in theatre and spent the first two years out of college bartending. I wasn't making any money and felt completely unfulfilled. Then, my husband's friend offered to get me a job with a hospital helping to recruit bone marrow/stem cell donors. I took the job and it didn't take long before I realized how much I wanted to help people. I wanted to learn more and do more. I decided 6 months later to attend community college and pursue my RN. I spent two years on my prerequisites and I start nursing this fall. I've been working in a nursing home for over a year and I love it!
Sorry for the novel! But it's been an amazing journey. I've never been happier and this is the first time I've been truly passionate about something- wanting to know everything about it, thinking and talking about it constantly, and not wanting to accept anything less than my best. Good luck!!

I fell into it. I was looking for a job, saw CNA classes and have it a try.. Then I fell in love! Few years later enrolled in school. Nursing is a wonderful career, very rewarding. It can be stressful but it's worth it. It's not glamorous like on tv. It's dirty work. Between blood, urine and feces -of course given where you work, you might work at a desk or in a doctors office- you get into into a lot. You either love it or you hate it. I love it, dirty and all... I help people... And when they look at you and say thank you, it's so worth it!

I never wanted to be a nurse. My parents pushed me toward the medical field all through high school. I was kind of an artsy....girl who wanted to do a lot of things with myself. At 22 I had a baby, my LD nurse(who is now a midwife) was the most amazing compassionate knowledgable women I have ever met....8 months later I quit my demanding job, packed up and move back to my parents and enrolled in school. I've had a few set backs(failed my first semester of the ADN program) but I'm in the LPN program now, my pinning is July 31 and I'm
President of my class. I haven't ever gave up and know that one day my feet will hit the floor as an LD nurse!! If I can help one woman the way she did me all of the sacrifices Made for myself and my now 4 year old will be well worth it!

I decided to become a nurse because I have a heart to help others in time of need. I feel my life is valuable when it is shared to help others. Not only by my skills but also to encourage when others feel hopeless.
