How far do you work from home?

i am kinda piggy backing off another post here regarding "how long should you wait before transferring to another unit" i am a new grad 6 months as an rn now. my questions is would you transfer to another facility because of the distance? help me out here. i drive 25.5 miles one way, 40 minutes, 28 stop lights (yeah, i counted them all the way home one day......:stone). the facility where i work it seems like everyone lives locally or less than 10 miles away from the hospital. the reason i choose the facility is because i do like the health system where i work. i checked out the other facilities in the system but they are all still appx 20 miles away.

i am breaking my nursing legs in well on my floor and i get along well with the staff and management. my question is would you leave well enough alone and suck up the drive or would you jump ship (i am thinking about 6 months from now) to go to another health system closer to home. i am thinking about waiting awhile so i can get good experience under my belt. there are two different health systems within 10 miles from my home.

gheeze, i am feeling ungrateful seeing how many people are having a hard time finding a job anywhere.

I drive about 30 miles each way, it takes me about 45 minutes to get to work. That's from getting in my car at home to punching in on my floor, which is a bit of a walk from the parking garage. And I usually stop for a soda on my way in. :)

There is a hospital about 10 minutes from my house, and the pay there is similar, but I choose to work where I do because the experience is great (there's no other neurology program like it anywhere in the region), I really like my co-workers, the benefits are fantastic, and it's a union shop, so I feel that my job and benefits are a little more protected than they would be elsewhere.

My husband drives about 45 miles to work, it takes him a full hour to get there, maybe a little less on weekends when he doesn't have to search the garage for a parking space. But he's a trauma junkie, and it's the only level 1 trauma ER in the area. So I guess it's all what you're looking for in a position. But I would definitely stick it out for a year, at least. Employers don't like to see "job-hopping" on a resume, especially for a new(ish) graduate! Just my :twocents:

30 miles....takes about 35 minutes or so. I know people who drive well over an hour. Not for me. If you're happy there, I wouldn't jump ship, especially in this economy. I would say your drive is not much more than average. Though I do say you have a lot more lights. I have two stoplights only.

I drive about 68 miles one way (136 miles) round trip. It takes me about 1 hour and 20 min to get to work. I work at a children's hospital and love what I do and the people I work with. That is the ONLY reason I drive that far plus I work two 12 hour shifts a week so it is manageable. I hate the drive but would take that over working some where I hated or not like the people I work with.

I drive about an hour both ways to where I work. It's not worth it but it was the only place hiring new grads.

I drive 49.6 miles each way, and work 3 12's a week. It takes me just under an hour to get there and back, and at least 30 miles of it is highway-ish, so not too bad. I've been commuting to my facility for 4.5 years now. I don't love the drive, but I do love where I work!

This is actually the shortest commute I've had since 2002, so I'll take it. At one point, back when I was a graphic designer and my employer sold our building and moved our office, I was driving 180 miles/day, round-trip, four times a week -- they only let me telecommute one day, it was ridiculous! That is one of the biggest reasons I switched jobs and industries. OMG, I was a wreck with all that driving in DC traffic -- and my route (the shortest/fastest one) took me on almost all the major traffic-snarled highways -- I-66, 495, and 395. UGH. I was driving AT LEAST three hours/day. So yeah, roughly 50 miles each way is easy for me! LOL

i have to drive about 45 min each way 4 days a week. i actually enjoy the drive because after a stressful day i have that drive time to reflect on what happened that day.

I live 1 yes 1 mile from work! I love it, I work over nights and am home in bed before most of my co-workers are even out of town! I would have it any other way! Yes, I could make more money driving just 15 miles but my time and wear and tear on my car isn't worth it for me to drive. I Love my job and the people I work with I have no plans to move on anytime soon!!!

I work 7 miles from my job. There's a hospital right in my town, about 1 mile away. However, I love the health system I'm in.

1.2 miles, and probably a good quarter mile is over the river on the bridge! takes me about 5 min ( which is sad for being so close) to get to work... too many dumb drivers and stoplights in the area

2.8 miles! Yeah, I'm a lucky duck. I work where I want and its' close to home. But it all depends on where you wantto be. Sometimes closer isn't better.

I am a new grad. I work in Labor and Delivery. I live 1.13 miles from work according to mapquest. I worked my butt off and did extra work in school, I am still very fortunate and grateful.
