I had a difficult shift this afternoon, and was called off after only 4 hours. That's fine, I can go home, kiss my kids good night and go to bed. Well, I woke up a few hours later and laid in bed thinking, "I should have done XYZ better....". Could not go back to sleep. It was so frustrating, I just could not turn off the internal clinical instructor! She would not be quiet!
So, what do you do to unwind after work?

Listen to the news a bit. Vent here a bit.
If I have energy, go dunk in the pool at my health club a bit.
Long hot showers help.
Air guitar to my mp3's. . .

If you can muster the energy, exercise is great. Yoga is great to relax before going to sleep. Reading or getting into a good movie can really distract my mind off of work too. If all else fails, I nice big glass of wine

*Sigh* I am not a drinker. Something tells me that if I drank a little, then I would drink alot. Too many grandparents were alcoholics, watched my grandma die of liver failure, not pretty.
But the exercise deal sounds good. And reading....I'll give it a try..

I come here, and also read news websites, the local paper online, etc. But the crazy part is that i put my sunglasses on if i'm online at night. It keeps the bright light from waking me up too much, so i can sleep later.

Fix me a fresh, hot cup of coffee, kick off the shoes, shower, and put on hte "comfies".
Then I come here to see what's up, and touch base with my Allnurses pals.
After reading some of THEIR posts, I often find my day wasn't so bad afterall !

Drive out to my in-law's ranch to get my 4 year old - and sit and visit with them, hearing about all the oh so smart things my son did that day. "Isn't he just the smartest young man?". :) Right now we can head out to pick raspberries - my son eats most of them. Head on home then, check out my email and allnurses. Sometimes I eat junk food - that's a bad thing. Something salty . . .
I usually have a hard time exercising after work (I get up at 1:45 a.m to be at work at 2:45 a.m. and work until 3 p.m.). A walk with my son while he rides his bike is a good thing - there is a horse pastured nearby and a crabapple tree . . so we pick apples and feed them to the horse.
Something simple, quiet, peaceful.

Papaw John and ZASHAGALKA,
Please don't ever stop posting. You are a breathe of fresh air, and while I don't always agree with you guys, the two of you often crack me up! :rotfl:

I go for a run. Even if it's only for 15-20 min. The fresh air feels great after being at the hospital all day and is such a great stress relief (& of course there's the bonus of keeping me physically healthy too)!!
Then after a hot shower, I sometimes heat up a lavender neck wrap for my shoulders & neck (ahhhhhh).
And if I get a back rub from my husband too, well....I'm ready to face it all over again the next day....refreshed :)

I eat, walk the dogs, play on allnurses, go to bed with a book and fall dead asleep from exhaustion. Like you I do have trouble sometimes waking up after a while. Good luck.

I'm finding putting the soundscape music station on my TV lets me unwind better than watching any kind of TV.
