did you know that in the state of Oklahoma the public school employees are not required to have any CPR/First Aid training. my 4 yo daugther recently fell at school and hit her head, she was bleeding pretty bad and the school nurse had called me because she felt that she needed stitches. Thankfully she didn't I took her to the ER and the doc said that it was more superficial and that she woulnd't need stitches.
When I asked her teacher about whether or not she was certified in CPR/fFirst Aid training, she said she was but that it is not required for them. But most of them are. BUT NOT REQUIRED ???
That floors me. It really scares me to know that if my child were to fall on the playground, become unconcsious and/or unresponsive that there MIGHT be someone there who would know what to do at that very moment, rather than spend 5 minutes trying to find someone who does. that 5 minutes could determine life or death for my child.
It really scares me...
I sent an e-mail to the State Education Superintendent regarding this. I am considering going to my state rep, congressmen, senator, legislator.ect. To get it to be mandatory that ALL public school employees be certified in CPR/First Aid.

Well I hate to tell you this... but... I live and work in OKlahoma, I am an LPN, and a lot of clinic types settings don't even "require" you to be CPR certified. I am, and so is everyone I know... If it was required for every teacher, I do believe that the school system would be the ones to have to pay out the money for the training and the certifications of the teachers and its probably something that they dont want to do. I agree its scary. But I don't know if there is much to be done about it. Surely they at least have some basic first aide type training or something... be curious to find out if they have anything.

CPR/ First aid wouldn't be of any benefit if your kid were to fall and sustain head trauma anyways.

It would if they stopped breathing for some reason.
exactley. My daughter fell and hit her head at school and the worst possible thoughts go thru the mind.
why is that? I don't understand it.

Is it a normal thing in other states for teachers to have CPR?

If they stopped breathing, then they most likely broke their spine or their neck...unless you have ADVANCED training, you aren't going to know how to get that airway back.
You could go on and on with the seriousness of injuries, what if this, what if that.
I don't think that teachers need CPR training or first aid training.
I had a relative that was a school nurse for 15 years, and she said that the worse injury she ever had (not illness related) was a broken arm because a child was pushed from the top of a large slide.

As a parent I would want my son's teachers to be CPR/First Aid certified (they are). I don't care that they may never use it or that the worst injury they have ever seen is a broken arm. As a parent I am extremely protective and if you are working with children you can never go wrong with having a little medical training. It can't hurt and it can help.
Oh okay, thanks for clearing that up then.

-How many school districts can bear the cost of CPR training for all employees? Many districts don't even have enough BOOKS. Tell me-does an overprotective parent let their child go to a friends house for a sleep over only if a parent is CPR certified?

It's probably a money issue. The temp. cost of making sure all employees are trained in first aid/CPR is less costly than the future cost of lawsuit, but no one sees it that way.
It also depends on if the school is required to have a school nurse. I don't remember if it's a NC thing or a national thing, but every school here is supposed to have a school nurse (although that nurse might have two other schools).
It might be easier to have one or two resource people in the school trained instead of everyone. I have a few teachers and a secretary who are trained in first aid, and since we have an AED on campus, we do have a few with CPR training.
