Florida Roll Call ......

Ok - who are you, what do you do, where abouts in Florida do you live (or if you are not in Floirda, what part of Florida do you want to move too), what is your clinical area, you status (CNA, LPN, RN, Student, Whatever) and anything else you might want to add.

Some of you already know me, I lived in Florida for a little over 20 years. An RN, I worked and lived in Sarasota. Went to nursing school at Manatee Community College and also University of South Florida at Sarasota. Great place .... love the beaches and the area is truly a wonderful place. I generally work surgical recovery and while in Florida, I worked in post open heart step down and also worked as a nurse manager.

I am a single dad raising three children (all are now teenagers - whew is this rough!). They are really great kids and I am a very luck father to have them. :uhoh3:

Hi Sue, welcome to allnurses.com.

I don't depend on overtime to make ends meet, but surely want to make time and a 1/2 when working it. Good luck! Keep up the good fight. As you know, not many of us in Florida are unionized at the moment. :)

Sorry I am not from FLA. I am from Chicago.. I am looking for information re: Jacksonville University on-line Degree completion program I though maybe you would have the scuttle being from FLA please post any thing you know

Thanks kim:o

Hello,

I moved to Florida from CT just last November. I got a lot of help from folks on this website as I made my decision about where to go. I live in Orange City and work at the BirthCare Center at Florida Hospital Deland. I have an ADN, BA (psych), MA (community psych), and I am in the process of completing my MSN through the University of Phoenix-Online. I decided to move to FL after my three kids grew up and after my divorce. I have lived in New England my entire life and I HATE :( winter.

I am not crazy about the medical atmosphere here in Florida, it is kind of behind the times. And sometimes I miss my two oldest who are still in CT. But, when I feel that way I just have to go to any one of the amazing beaches here in this paradise of a state and I feel better about my decision.

Of course, Hurricane Charley and now Hurricane Frances (only 3 weeks later) are testing my resolve! Fortunately I bought a block house that sits on pretty high ground so I should be okay I think. But who knows. I wish you all the best as we will all be affected by this storm. :o

Good luck in the hurricaine my prayers are with you. I am starting my BSN on line with U of P and am a little concerned with my lack of computer literacy. Any advice????

Thanks KIM:rolleyes:

Thanks for the prayers Kim. I don't know how the BSN program is designed but I know that the first class I took toward my MSN was a pretty easy class that I could tell was designed for the purpose of allowing us to get adjusted to the format. You have two options for "going to class". One is to use Outlook Express and the other is to use the web based classroom. I can tell you that using Outlook Express is much more user friendly and has more options. You will do well to avoid the web based classroom unless you have to be away from your home computer. The Uof P program is very challenging and time consuming. Get ready to spend a LOT of time in your computer chair!!! LOL. You can email me at my home address if you have any other questions.

:) Hello Everyone! My husband and I moved here to Ft. Myers from Wisconsin just in time for hurricane Charlie! Aside from some tree's and utility poles down, no major damage. We were without power for 6 days tho'. and what fun that was getting ready for a new job by candlelight :-) Worked geriatrics in WI., and took a job here in LTC but have since left that postion for various reasons. Am now interviewing for Lee Mem. Hosp. and also a LTC and Hospice position. Not sure what I'll decide at this point. I love our area, and the heat wasn't as bad as everyone told me it would be. I have enjoyed getting to know our new area and especially all the shopping area's. I am looking forward to my first warm Christmas, but do miss my children who still live in WI. Anyone with info on FT. Myer's area nurs. jobs please send me a private message. Its difficult not knowing which are good facilities and where to stay away from. Thanks..and for those of you on the coast... I pray you stay safe. KZ :uhoh21:

Hi All, I am currently living in Pittsburgh, PA but I lived and worked in Boca Raton for 23 years before moving here 7yrs. ago. There are many things I miss about FL but I do prefer the climate here. I also don't envy any of you having to deal with all the hurricaines and work schedules vs. family committments. I hope you stay safe with Ivan on the way.

Welcome to Florida, KZ! I just wanted to tell you that in all of my research regarding jobs in Florida, the Lee Memorial healthcare system sounded like the best bet for a good place to work. I didn't want to live so far in the Southwest though since my other relatives are all in Central FL. So I ended up near Daytona Beach. From everything I have been told you will do well to look into Lee Memorial. Good luck!

Hi Marcee .... Florida is a beautiful State with lots to offer many different types of people. For nurses, there is plenty of different and unique opportunities for employment. Florida still offers LPN's many opportunities in the hospital environment, if that is what you are looking for. Wages are pretty low in the Sarasota/Bradenton area, but in time, your wages do improve.

I just moved from Sarasota after living there for better than 20 years. My kids were in the Sarasota County School District and for the most part, the schools were ok. For me, I felt the local residents, many of which are retired, did not support the school system very well. They felt as though they had raised their kids and they did not feel an large obligation to the local kids. Unfortunately, for them, these kids will grow up to be the doctors, bankers, lawyers, nurses, teachers, etc of the future. This was discouraging to me, but overall, the area is lovely and there are many nice things to do. If you like the beaches, there is really none better than Sarasota, except for perhaps the keys!

Good luck with school and with your move.
