Failed two sciences and I can't get into a nursing program.....is there still any hope?

Published

I have been trying to get into a nursing program but unfortunately I have failed two major science classes. I worked my hardest and it still wasn't good enough. I've been doing some research as to what might be the next step, such as receiving a bachelors degree in health science as opposed to a BSN. I also have plans on meeting with an advisor as well and decide both on what I should do. I know that there is a 5 year wait that must be done once you fail two sciences. I was also looking into becoming a LVN but I'm not sure if it has the same requirements as a BSN. Is there still any hope for me to become some sort of nurse without waiting 5 whole years?.......Positive feedback would be greatly appreciated.

It will vary from program to program whether you can repeat classes. You will have to do some research

I'm curious as to which two classes you failed and what your study methods were. Do you need to establish better study methods that will work better for you? Or do you think nursing may not be the path for you?

I'm not saying this insensitively. There is no shame in discovering that you're meant to take a different career path, if that does happen to be the case. But if your study methods could use improvement, there are many knowledgeable students and nurses here who could give you some pointers.

Have you checked the minimum science requirements to get into a bachelors in health science? Where I am, students need a minimum of 90% to get into the health science programs.

Are you able to go to another school and start from scratch? Have you met with the instructors/a tutor to find out what exactly you are misunderstanding in your science classes?

If you are able to start a new program and have your heart set on nursing, I would try to learn what it is that is troubling you with these classes and look elsewhere for school.

I ask this because, yes those grades will be on transferring transcripts, but for some of the nurses who failed that I started school with, they were able to be accepted at another. Our school had the 5-year wait rule, as well.

Check the LVN requirments, if they are the same as the BSN, check the CNA requirments, some nurses take the CNA, LVN, RN route. Before you meet with the advisor, try to figure out what your preferred learning style is and what occupations suit your style, next look at the admission requirments for each of the occupations. The more prepared you are for your meeting with the advisor, the more you will benefit.

It would help to know which two sciences you failed so we know what options to suggest...

You failed two of either A/P 1 or 2, chemistry, or microbiology, all at an associate's degree level? At this point, I don't care what anyone thinks: you need to choose a new career path.

They have minimum requirements and pre reqs for a reason. Meeting with your advisor is the best thing for now so you can see what your options are.

Thank you for your reply. It was both A&P 1 and microbiology, I believe it may be my study habits. For my A&P 1 I had more of a better study habit than micro but was unable to pass. Repetition is what most were saying by it just didn't stick that what for me. I understand that I new career path may be in order but I will continue to at least try and pray until I receive a direct answer from God. I really appreciate the honesty.

I will be meeting with an advisor today as well everyone. I will have an update as too what my next options are.

I am not sure what you mean by "positive" comments. The first thing you need to do is figures out why you failed those two science courses. I am imagining that they were A&P, Chem or microbiology. It sounds as if you feel you studied hard so what was it abpout those classes that you didn't get. Was it the memorization, the math (Lots of algebra in Chem). or failure to understand the scientific method in Micro. You teachers should have been able to give you some feedback. All of the classes require tremendous attention to detail which is also a a trait that a good nurse has. can you retake the courses?

I have never been very good at math and franly the thought of taking college algrbra terrified me to the point that I almost didn't attempt nursing. When I signed up for the course I asked the teacher to sign a slip for tutoring on the first day. He asked if I didn't want to see how I did first and I said trust me on this. With the help of a tutor from day one I managed to pass that class wth a B. So perhaps you just need a tutor to tell you where you are going wrong.

These sciences do more than give you a knowledge base. A nurse needs to have strong analytical, and criticle thinking skills and these classes set you up to think about things in an analytical way. Perhaps you do need to think about a new career path. Being a nurse is not for everyone. You may find you like doing healthcare admin but remember you still need some sort of knowledge base in the sciences in order tp understand how treatments and interventions work.

Good luck to you
