Anybody have any input on interventions for this diagnosis? He is newly diagnosed and about to consult with an allergy specialist to hopefully find out what foods are causing the flare ups.
He is either absent or in the clinic multiple times daily with abdominal cramping. He has an anti - sposmadic med PRN but "it never helps."
The counselor and I feel there are other issues at play. The mom told counselor that her ex husband thinks she has made up illness for the student. And she offhandedly commented about him having psychosomatic issues "but this is not the case now." We have told her that we need an official diagnosis from a physician so we can maybe do a 504.
Right now we are in that hamster wheel. Seems like it gets harder and harder to keep some of these kids in class.
Help!!!

Is he on carafate? Epigastric pain? Or true abdominal pain? With it being abdominal....are we sure it's not Crohns/IBS/etc?
At camp we had a kiddo with EOE on an asthma preventive (can't remember if it was Qvar or something else). His instruction was to swallow the medication (not inhale) and have NPO 30 minutes after. He was also on Nexium and something else, I can't remember.
Hamster wheel is right. My bells are ringin' with the comment about "psychosomatic".

The only way I would buy into this is if an endoscopy and biopsy had been performed. Then there would be specific MD orders for management at school and a plan to move forward to identify triggers, if possible, and diet restrictions.
Otherwise, you're right, the hamster wheel keeps on spinning.
Good luck!!

Never complains of epigastric pain, more intestinal cramping like in IBS. only RX (I know of) is for Hyoscyamine. A few minutes ago when mom picked up, she is now saying borderline EOE. She is ditzy and all over the place when I have conversations with her.
He never seems in distress but just keeps coming back and back and back. You know how you have frequent fliers but then you have the kids that are even worse than them - like super frequent fliers with their name engraved on a cot????
With no actual documentation at this time, I am leaning towards Mother Induced School Avoidance Syndrome. At the same time, I want to do and document all of the interventions I can think of to try to get him back to class.

Gotcha. Document everything...but OD's right - kid needs a scope before you can be of much use here.

This! I have had a couple of students with this dx and they have always had specific MD orders for what we need to do here at school.

@Davey Do I am sure you're probably tired of being summoned by the school nurses but a graphic (preferably featuring Tina Turner on a hamster wheel) would not be amiss here...

Oh yeah, ruby jane- I'll be tired of doing art when they pry the drawing implement from my cold dead fingers!
