A few years ago I had a kid who had a boot and crutches for a broken pinky toe! I thought that was bad...

But this morning I had one walk in on crutches, with a brace, got an elevator key and extra passing time slip for ~~GROWING PAINS~~

I am NOT. EVEN. KIDDING.

Because physicians just give them what they want so that they don't have to deal with these type of kids/parents. I have teachers say "well, the doctor gave him so it must be legit." Nope, they do it for the same reason we call the parent the 4th time the kid has come to the clinic in 12 minutes for NOTHING! So, I guess we are all a little to blame.

Had a mom call me this morning, student left message her hand was hurting so bad so she wanted me to look. 1 blister on palm from the bars (and not the good kind either) at gymnastics class last night. Kid crying on phone to mom begging to be picked up. Mom told her no but what do you want to bet she will start feeling guilty and pick her up by lunchtime????

I believe it. Twice I've had a kid with a broken foot use a wheelchair for the 6 weeks, because they want to use crutches. Yep, mom got MD to write an order to allow wheelchair.

welcome to bubble wrap kids with helicopter parents! Kids are not allowed to be hurt phycially or emotionally these days. It hurts their self esteem..poor babies! But as a school nurse..handle it! That why you took the job! Stupidity amongs parents & their precious littel ones reigns supreme..and THEY get away with it! Welcome, sweet heart to the NOW reality.

i have noticed a change in myself over the last few years. I used to fight more to keep the kids in school, now i'm quicker to call home and let the parents decide. I preface my call by telling them it's their choice, and i'm not requiring that they pick their precious up for their sniffy nose or scratchy throat, but honestly if it keeps the same kid from coming back and back and back, i'll make the call and lean on the parent. (it usually turns the parent into the bad guy in the kid's mind when they won't come, which is a win-win and happens fairly often. )

I think part of the problem is that the kids constantly have their phones on them. Most of the kids I see have already texted their parents before they get to me. And so many times, I have sent a kid back only to have their parent call me and say that the kid is blowing up their phone to go home so they might as well come get them so they can have some peace. Who is the boss here?

LOL!! i just had a dad mad at me that I was sending his kid home for a stuffy nose. Which i didn't, kid left my office and called mom from front office phone who sent dad to pick up. He demanded to know why I was sending him home even through I told him several times "I am not, I did not call your wife your son did." Principal took over.....

because of course his son's word is gold. If he said he came to see you, then he must have. Mind you, this is the same child that can't tough through a day with a sniffle.
