Just had a mom, who is on my campus(HS), call me and ask me what the protocol for the elementary campus. I asked her about what she launched into her story.

Her daughter was hurt at church on Sunday (we go to church together). She said her daughter went to the school nurse and they did not look at it or do anything for her. States when she picked her up from school her daughter was crying because it hurt so bad. Her daughter is not a complainer or ff so she couldn't understand why they did not even look at it. States if they would have just called her she would have taken her to the dr. yesterday (after the attendance deadline, so she would not be absent) instead of using and whole day absence today. After talking to her SIL that is a nurse they think her knee cap is broken.

I told her I could not answer for them because I was not there. She is one of those types that likes to keep things stirred up. I will not through my co-workers under the bus. I told her I have even missed things that the student said happened at home and not even looked at it. They see 100 (+) student's a day. One student with an "old" injury on a busy Monday could slip through the cracks.

This annoys me to no end. If it happened on Sunday, presumably in the morning at church, why did the parent not do anything all day Sunday?

Because she wanted to use the school nurse as a primary care provider on Monday. Not okay.

Parents don't seem to understand the distinction between school nurse's office and pediatrician's office. I have kids all day Mondays reporting injuries and illnesses that happened over the weekend, and all say the parents did nothing. One kid yesterday had a sunburn so bad it was purple, and nothing had been put on it. Obviously this didn't happen while waiting for the bus. C'mon now!

I guess the point is, if she wants to be upset she should have done it on Sunday, after the injury actually happened.

"After talking to her SIL who is a nurse, they think............"

Ok, this tells me that they still have not taking this child for medical follow up. DOES SIL have a portable x-ray machine????? Is she able to diagnose any more than the school nurse???? C'mon now.

Why is it ok for the parent to do nothing???

Dad is taking student to Dr. today. The big deal, I think, was the absence. She would have been counted all day at school if she stayed passed 9 am and then left for a dr. appt. Since she was out at the 9 am cut off it goes toward her attendance. So no perfect attendance at the end of the year.

I just knew to watch what I said because she will talk and embellish to make it sound more drastic.

Why is this School nurse's issue, if it happened on Sunday? I would have to assume that the child complained throughout the day, after the accident happened.

I have kids come to me on Monday mornings, all of the time, complaining about something that happened over the weekend. I always ask them what their parents had to say about it, which is generally met with a response of " They did nothing" or " They told me to wait until I could come and see you" :banghead:

Irritating. We are employed by school districts to take care of kids during the school day and that's all. Conversely, it's equally irritating when a child breaks something on a Saturday and the parents don't tell us. I had one break their foot, was non weight bearing and the child showed up with a walker. smh Sometimes I feel like writing a book.

Update: Little Darling has a deeply bruised knee cap. No fracture. Mom to see how she does the rest of the week and then take her to a specialist. Got Little Darling an elevator pass for about a week.

I bet my patellas were continually bruised when I was a kid from falling off my bike or tripping over my skates!! And here I am - a fully functional adult.

Had a mother pull her child out of school for a splinter that I said would probably work its way out. Took him to the doctor the next day, kept out of school. Dr. agreed with what I said, she didn't like it. Out the next day because it hurt and out the next day to go to the HAND SPECIALIST, who said that he would not remove it as it is almost out. Three and a half days without learning for a seventh grader over a splinter! Helicopter moms are the worst.

What do you do in situations like this? I just help them out and call parents about it, to cover my butt in case I can't do anything and mom gets upset.

I do the same. But there times when I am busy and cannot (or forget) to call or take the time to look at an old injury. I have had parents get upset because I didn't call or do anything. I listen to them, all the while thinking you should have taken the to the dr. already.

I take what this mom says with a grain of salt, because she has been known to embellish. I did not call and talk to the other nurse, because I know their office gets crazy and didn't want to trouble them.

I just had a kid come in with a clearly broken thumb. Hurt it Saturday playing soccer. Called the mom and she was wanting to know if I can tell her if it is broken or not.

Take. Your. Kid. To. The. Doctor.
