Does This Sound About Right . . . . . .

I am not sure that it's this dire yet.... I think it depends on what part of the country you are looking in. I still see a lot of LPN's with jobs, although I must admit I am not sure how the new grad LPN's are faring. You would probably know more than I about the LPN job market.

I only have an ADN - I am still not having much trouble getting a job BUT I am not sure I would recommend a nursing student get an ADN at this point. If I had it to do all over, I would have done the BSN. At the time I was in nursing school, it was not as big of a deal - ADN's were still getting hired over BSN's in my part of the country.

No, it does not sound right. I think it is far easier obtaining employment as a LPN, than RN. I also heard this same talk, 27 years ago. LPN's have many jobs out there. Go get your BSN only if you want it. Otherwise, let it go. They will never get rid of us, never. Peace!

It depends on what part of the country. Here, in south Louisiana, all nursing jobs are pretty steady. The R.N.s, however, are in extremely high demand. Well-qualified LPNs are in great demand as well. Unfortunatly, it's harder to find a hospital here that will hire LPNs for anything but Pediatric and Med/Surg. Every healthcare agency here has an abundance of RN openings. And, still a fair amount of LPN openings.

i truly, truly believe that bsn is the way to go.

I am in the northeast, and yeah, that sounds about right! The majority of the hospitals up here won't even look at you without the BSN, especially if you have no experience. And if you do get hired somewhere, you better be working on getting the BSN. I sometimes wonder if I would have bothered to become a nurse if I had known all of this stuff way back when.

I live in NY, and hospitals here post ads that say BSN required. The only place I see in NY that hires LPN's are nursing homes, and maybe clinics or doctors offices. In my opinion, I think LPN's will be phased out completely because they are not allowed to do assessments or push IV meds.

I work at hospital in MS and they will not hire LPNs. Word through the grapevine is that there are several hospitals in our area going in that same direction.

Hi, I am an LPN on the East coast. I have 17 years experience in primarily the hospital setting and acute care nursing and I have been laid off twice since 2009 (and not once prior to 2009). Once from a position I had for 7 years and the other a position I had worked on and off for 10 years. I am struggling to find employment... acquaintances that I have in recruiting positions have told me that there has been an influx of new RN grads into work force, the hospitals won't hire them (so I have been told) and therefore more and more are moving into the LTC settings (and why hire an experience LPN when you can get a new grad RN probably cheaper--it is just smart business), taking positions that were formerly held by LPNs. Hospitals do not want LPNs anymore, and as I have been told they would rather not employ an associates degree RN either...here is a recent quote that I over heard " we would rather hire a mediocre BSN than an exceptional RN"..It really is sad, I understand the need to be educated in order to provide our patients with exceptional care, but there are so many talented LPNs and RNs out there who I think are getting a bum deal. I have been told since the day I became an LPN that my profession would be around much longer..I never really bought into it until now..I believe that LPNs will soon be a thing of the past and for those of you who have jobs ..hang on tight. I myself I gone back to school..first through the ASN and already have my BSN program chosen and have finished pre-reqs....I don't ever want to be out of work again..

My hospital doesn't hire LPN's unless they work in the clinic. I am an ADN nurse.

I'm also in the northeast, with an ADN. Hospitals won't look at an RN without a BSN, even with a previous BA or BS. Considering the jobs I've had (LTC, clinic, and home health), I sometimes wonder if I should've gone for my LPN instead of my RN.
