Does anyone else feel like they were born for this?

Published

So this is only my first semester in the program. I'm currently doing clinicals on a med/surg. I only have clinicals once a week and I wish I could do them more often. Everyday I finish I have a huge smile on my face and I just feel like I was born for this. I got to insert my first foley cath last Saturday. I also had to clean a couple of bm's but that doesn't bother me at all. Every clinical day I feel like I have made a difference. I see many posts where people question whether or not they picked the right major. Well, I know I did. Nursing owns.

Yippee! We need more enthusiastic nurses. Yes, I felt the same way. FINALLY, an outlet for my OCD tendencies and a chance to work with smart people who constantly challenge me. Very satisfying.

I'm glad to hear that you feel this way. I wanted to be a nurse since I was 4 years old but didn't get the chance for over 50 years. I, too, feel I was born for this. I have been working for just 10 months & only part time but if there are too many days between work days I get really antsy. I'm ready to go back.

I feel the same way! I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but I just feel like I "get it" when my classmates are struggling and spending hours and hours studying. I honestly feel like nursing is what I'm supposed to be doing and that maybe that's why some things have come so easily to me, not saying that nursing school is easy because it definitely is not. Today I had a validation and when I was done my instructor asked me did I work and I told her no that I had been a sahm of 3 boys for the last 8 years, she had suspected that maybe I work in some type of medical field presently and told me that it was apparent that something was "clicking" with me and performed as though I had medical experience and that I was going to be a great nurse. I left there today with the most wonderful feeling in the world!

I felt this way until I had my check off today. :banghead:

I have clinical once a week, and each week it just gets better. At the end of the 10 hour shift my feet hurt, but I am happy. Today I made a dying man smile, I confronted a crying woman afraid of getting a blood transfusion, and gave a sick man unable to communicate some control over his environment. Today was a good day!!!! This is what I was born to do.

No, not really.

That's not to say that I don't think I can be good at it, however. And I do enjoy it.

I totally feel the same way!! I can't imagine being happier doing anything else:nurse:

I haven't started clinicals yet (next week!!!) but each day after class I just can't wait for the next day to start! I have wanted to be a nurse since I was about 7, and I feel like I'm finally getting to live my dream, finally finding a place where I "fit". My whole life people have always told me they could see me as a nurse, so I guess it's just the way I'm wired. I've had to work jobs for years that don't fit well with my personality, or things I care about, but each time I learn about another nursing skill I think "wow, I can't believe they encourage us to do that!" I think in my former life I've always worked in situations where you're taught not to bring any of your emotion or compassion into play, but we learn about stuff like communication and comforting pts. and that's what I feel I'm best suited for personality-wise.

:yeahthat:

seriously, though, i just kinda fell into nursing...it was what was available at the times my mom could watch the baby eons ago. i love being a nurse and am totally excited to be back in school to bridge to my rn. although trying to reconcile being a real-world nurse at work and a by-the-book nurse at school may make me schizophrenic when it comes to clinical time!

I know what you mean by this. I've been married to a nurse for a long time, plus, working with nurses at the state prison for most of my life, I tend to consider things from a "real world" perspective. I also hurt my scores on tests by being too into personal responsibility and non-touchy-feely.

My wife finally told me: "If you see an option with flowers and butterflies...that's the right answer!"

In other words, don't be so concrete in the real world. :)

I am happy for you and this feeling. Some do feel they were "born" to it. Others, who will be equally good nurses are entering for a lot of other reasons......solid job prospects, money, (yes that is a consideration) and being "called" to it. Whatever the reasons, I am happy to have you all, if your heart is in it.
