Docs yelling at nurses....

Hi guys,

I have been reading the several posts about doctors yelling at the nurses. I am wondering:

1. As a male nurse, is it any different?

2. Have you ever had to deal with yelling physicians? If yes, what did you do? How did you deal with it? I read several posts stating from mouthing off to cry in the bathroom (mostly women on how they react).

3. It is my second career moving from a corporate environment with lots of politics. We cannot tolerate such things. A person can be written up for such behaviors. However, me going into nursing, I carry the same habits. I cannot put up with such behaviors. I am just wondering how to prepare myself. It is something common and have to learn to deal with it or there are ways to handle it without feeling embarrassed such as involving HR,etc...? The politically correct way that I know is to let the physician know that he doesnt realize that he is yelling and to go to a more private place to discuss it and if he doesnt listen, just walk away from him (ignore him).

Please enlighten me with your experiences and advises....

Surgeons are their own kind of arrogant and have yelled at me a number times usually when they have to take a patient back to the OR because they did not fix them the first time.

One broke scrub to come out to the unit and tell me that "YOU KILLED THAT WOMAN!!!" I had given a prescribed drug (nipride) and she just dropped and never came back. I was shocked for about 1/2 a second when he was yelling and then just said "are you screaming because you feel so bad, or because your trying to make me feel bad?" His jaw snapped closed and he walked away. He later told me that I was an excellent nurse and that if I ever needed anything to call him.

I think it was kickstart that said something to the effect that we all have bad days and not to buy into it. I totally agree, if a doc gets in your face staying calm and detached is the best policy, they have the right to their opinion, does not make it right.

you will most likely get yelled at by a doctor at some point... ive been yelled at.. cussed at.. had things thrown @ me.... it toughens you... i just wish i was in tweetys feathers... to never deal w/ a crazy doc!

of course, i have always pretty much been in the emergency dept. and some on call docs can get really mad @ 3am! .... you get to know certain docs ya work with and stuff... one of the best moments of my medical career was kicking over a tray for this plastics doc that was called in to the ER... i had sat up his trays many times and he was just pissin me off that night.....he always threw stuff.... no one would work w/ him cause he was such a pain..... well.... long story short... i kicked the hell out of the tray, spillled the suture kit all over the floor, gave him a look like he could go to hell, and said... HEY *INSERT HIS FIRST NAME* and yelled *SET UP YOUR OWN EQUIPMENT YOU PRICK!*...

i came really close to gettin fired.. that was WAY before i was a nurse.. i was a emt... and just working as an ER tech...

no kidding... from that day on.... he requested me when he came to the ER.. over the nurses and the er docs to be his assistant...

he taught me a lot... and i learned a lot from him...

he's old and retired now, but he still keeps in touch w/ me.....

he's a stubborn old man... but one of the best plastics docs i have ever worked with...

OMGosh that had me giggling. I bet he had the deer in the headlight look after that? LOL

I had a Doc who got VERY hot under the collar in ICU over something that was not done as he requested, so he had a valid complaint BUT I was not the one on the previous evening that this order should have been carried out.

He ranted and raved, got really red and hot under the collar IN FRONT of the pt.

He tried to rip me a new one so I just politely asked to see him outside where I dressed in down in a very professional manner but made him look so sheepish by the time I had finished with him.

My collegues said it was hysterical because he was 6ft 6" tall and I am a mere 5ft tall. I just told him that we were both professionals and to act as professionals meant NOT yelling at a person in front of the patient.

I sorted the problem out and phoned him back to inform him why his orders were not carried out.

After that we became great mates and he always did rounds with me!:uhoh21::lol2::lol2::lol2:

Trust me, I've dealt with crazy and angry docs on many occasions. Guess I've been lucky none of them have "yelled"

Perhaps I have a different definition than some because the other day a doctor talked to a nurse "why didn't you call me last night that my patient's BP was 200/100? He could have had a stroke. I need to know these things." She basically was talking in a normal voice. After she left the nurse said "did you see the way she yelled at me? I wasn't even on duty when the BP was that high."

To me yelling is a lot louder than what this nurse claimed was yelling. :trout:

We have one that sometimes goes beyond yelling. He likes to throw things. Scares the hell out of some of the female RNs.(Mommy probably didn't hug him enough). Of course, the hospital looks the other way. I have noticed that he is generally calmer among the male staff, as he likely worries about getting his butt kicked.

Yeah, Administration's tendency to look the other way when the doc's act out is amazing isn't it? We have one ortho that is a cl"ass" act, but he rakes in big bucks for the hospital with his "spine clinic". Surprisingly enough, no matter how many times you yellow sheet him, he remains in good standing. But the next time your doc started tossing stuff, I'd nail him with hostile work environment and workplace violence.

The Doc's I have seen get ugly have a reputation for it. It only takes a stupid reason for them to blow like a whale. I usually make some kinda of move stepping back, holding one ear and wiping my face to pretend they spit..lol..This happened years ago, but man that really made him look like the fool he is!

LOL Thats a great way to handle it.

From my experience, a doctor's/group of doctors' repeated demonstration of ill behavior towards nurses is often a reflection of Administration. The attitude upon high does often trickle downward.

I haven't really had any docs yelling at me during my years, but recently i was blantantly disrepected on the unit. I was during AM shift change and even though i had to give report on my 5 patients to the AM shift nurse, i was helping the CNA give pericare and linen change to a LOL. as i was attempting to leave the patients room, the residents, attendings and medical students were huddled outside the room (about 12 of them) and i was unable to get past any of them . I made 4 polite attempts to ask them to briefly step aside so i could pass, but they ignored me altogether! keep in mind i am 6'2" and 240 lbs, so there is no way you could miss me. I was exhuasted, and anxious to give my report and move on with my day off. I became very irritated at being not respected and i said "MOVE IT. DONT IGNORE ME. AND LOSE YOUR GOD COMPLEX NOW"! Well, it worked fast!

I never has this type of problem

probably because I am Aikido black belt, I have a 7 specializations, 3 graduations and I am a member of a motorcycle group.

I have found that if a doctor is yelling at me it is usually the result of one of two things...1. The doctor does not understand what is going on with the patinent and believes it is my fault or 2. The doctor does not understand what is going on with the patient.

People yell...Docs yell...Yes Sir, Yes Mam...give them what they need and move on. Choose your battles.

P.S. I am not an RN...BSN student...but I am a Medic and have worked in the ER. Manage the problem and forget the symptoms.

my boyfriend is a resident doctor and he told me that its usually the other way around...that the nurse's yell at the doctors, espeically if they are residents or interns. in my opinion however, i think it goes both ways. they both can be mean and nasty to each other. one is not worse than the other. i guess it depends on the stress level of the hospital you are in, and how well staffed it is. i don't know. but hey, just think of all the poor cna's out there that get yelled at by nurse's everyday for not working fast enough (lol!). i think its worse when the family of a patient yells at you though. that's like the ultimate worst. guys nurse's are usually loads nicer than female nurse's by the way (at least in my experiance) ; )
