they should hire the best staff, regardless of race. If they happen to be white; so be it. gonna get flamed

If it weren't for the fact that you're certain that the local labor pool is ethnically/racially diverse, I wouldn't worry about it. I work in a lily white facility in the suburbs, and it bothers me. However, you can't hire people who don't apply.

If this truly is the only facility without a work force that echoes the surrounding area, then yes, I would worry.

Sooo basically just ignore it because I do not work there anymore..gotcha...that makes a whole lot of sense..why didn't I just think of that.

If people ignored everything that didn't directly affect them there would never be any change or progress to be made.

Obviously there is just gonna be a difference of opinion here. YES, I very much love working at my current job that encourages diversity among staff and some people do not care because it does not directly affect them. Oh well, it is what it is..enough said

As long as your colleagues WORK and are COMPETENT, provide safe patient care, it shouldnt matter ONE bit otherwise you're being racist. (Think about it)

Your friend should be lucky to find a job. Let her at least attend orientation and than make up her mind how she sees fit. Not because of your "diversity" concerns.

I didn't tell my friend anything, she called me with concerns about this issue. Just about everyone in this city notices the exact thing about this facility. I am not racist just because I prefer to work in a diverse work environment with people from many different backgrounds. Are you or any of the other previous people who posted racist because you don't care about diversity.

I care. If I see that there is not a healthy mix I notice that right away. What I don't like is when an entire hospital is 80%+ nurses of the exact same racial/ethnic background. This is a very bad sign. This is a walk away from place. Also these facilities will have their CNAs 80%+ of a different but specific racial background.

It's like they looked at the two races for "traits" compatible with money making and so they hire them, just like slaves. Makes me sick for all parties.

Try working in an area where for a 150 mile radius 90% of the population is white. The staff- from drs to housekeeping, dietary, nursing...... will reflect that mostly.

Is the issue that your friend is concerned because she isn't part of the numerically dominant group and isn't sure she will be accepted of fit in there?

That's a legitimate concern.

We should keep in mind that diversity means many things. Not only race, or national origin, but also age, gender, religion, political viewpoints, sexual orientation etc. Perhaps this place is lacking in one type of diversity, and rich in others. Always working in Chicago, I've always worked with a diverse population, but the specific groups would differ based on setting.

Sometimes we also tend to self-segregate and may not apply at a place due to a perception of bias.

If there is discrimination in hiring practices, I would hope someone would report that.
