CSULA Fall 2021

Hi all!
I just wanted to create this forum for students who are applying to CSULA Fall 2021 for the BSN Nursing track in case we had questions for each other, wanted to share thoughts, stats and to support each other through this journey.

I was wondering if anyone has applied and knew if CSULA requires verification for volunteer hours in their NursingCAS application portion? Also, will they accept any amount of volunteer hours under 50? I know you can add a document. Thank you!

I was wondering the same thing. I tried attaching a CC transcript with only one class, and the system says "it's too empty/small." I emailed ------------------- and called. I hope she replies. I'll update if she does. But in the meantime, if someone knows the answer, please comment! Thank you so much. I hope everyone had a nice holiday!

I've also emailed her twice and I have not gotten any response. I did get in touch with the admissions at my school and they said you can order transcripts from any school because it will all show up on one transcript. I'll maybe submit one electronically and one by mail just in case. There's only 3 weeks left....

Hope this is helpful

Hi guys!

I just submitted my application. I'm applying with a 4.0 GPA both overall and prereqs, and a 90.7 on the TEAS. I also have around 200 volunteer hours that I put, but I'm not sure if they would count this. Good luck to everyone!

She has not replied to me either, sadly. And I agree with your school's decision.

Just submitted my application and ordered my transcripts. Just have to anxiously wait now for the next 3 months. All I can do is pray ??

Same here. Just submitted and gonna be a long wait to see. I’ll die of 6 week microbio course first before the acceptance or denials come in ?

Does anyone know if CSULA focuses on any individual categories of the TEAS for admission? I know CSULB only asks for reading and overall % but I wasn’t sure if CSULA did the same thing

Based on your stats, I think you are good. I don't think you have to worry about that :,). They used to focus on Reading and English, but now they look at the entire app.

Hi! I am a pre-nursing student and I am planning to apply. I have a GPA of 3.7 , TEAS score of 67% and I am worried that I might not get into the program. For those admitted to the csula nursing program right now, what was your GPA and TEAS core when you applied? I'm thinking if I should apply to other nursing programs if my GPA and TEAS score is not competitive enough.

To be honest, your GPA is not that competitive for CSULA Nursing Program, but you can definitely get into CSUB Nursing Program with your grades. But anything can happen. Keep trying.

Cal State LA’s nursing program only accepts 70 students per year in the fall, when normally 1500 people apply (maybe it will be less for this cohort with covid and whatnot). If you do the math that is only 4.6% of applicants who get chosen. At CSULB they chose 80 students twice per year, 80 for fall, 80 for Spring, so 160 per year. On average I think 1000 per semester (or 2000 per year) apply, (something like that I forgot the exact number)... So that averages to 8% of applications who get accepted per semester. I guess what you’re asking is WHY so many people apply.

Southern California is impacted and all nursing schools over here are hard to get into. CSULA and CSULB are extremely great schools with an amazing reputation. You will find a job anywhere with those degrees. Also you would have your BSN and not an ADN by the end of the program. CSU’s in general are extremely impacted for nursing since they have amazing financial aid and extremely cheap tuition. Without aid, CSULA’s BSN program in total is about 20,000$. Long Beach is even cheaper since it’s 1 semester less, so there it’s like 17,000-18,000$ without aid! BUT with financial aid it could be much much less, or even free! (I know many people who didn’t have to pay anything this semester and actually just got money back from FAFSA). This year I only qualified for a 2300$ grant and I took out some subsidized loans for the rest, but next year I probably will have it free because my income dropped quite a bit since covid. Im guessing on my end, after grants and everything I’ll probably only owe 10,000$ in subsidized loans which is not bad at all! Not a lot of people wanna be 100,000-200,000$ in debt by going to West Coast University, or Mount Saint Mary’s. UC’s are typically “better” schools simply because of the reputation. However at the UC’s, tuition is double the cost of CSU’s tuition, and the UC’s pre-reqs to get into the nursing program there are the equivalent of a doctor’s pre-reqs! If I’m going to do all of that work I better become a doctor not a nurse LOL. Additionally, UC’s have an even worse acceptance rate that CSU’s do believe it or not. I hope that kind of answers the question as to why so many people wanna go to CSU’s. In short: MONEY! LOL.

Ninja 1968,

your post is extremely useful. THANKS ALOT. Based on you post, I can tell you are very familiar with the CSU and UC schools. I have one more question regards to the ranking of CSU schools. I know there are many ranking on Google, but I still don't trust them, especially they sometime place CSUF in front of CSULB. So can you give me a ranking of top10 NUrsing school in CSU. PLZ I am totally fine if you are speaking out of your opinion.

Right now, I only know CSULB, SDSU, and CSULA are the best, but what come after these three school.

Hi I’m sorry I just read this now!! Being honest, living in Southern California, I did not want to move. I also did not want to be in a lot of debt. I’m 27 and live on my own, so no support from parents. That all said, I specifically only applied to CSULA and CSULB because those are the only affordable schools that offer a BSN degree that is close to where I live! I may not be the best person to ask this question, I’m so sorry. I’m crazy though, I highly recommend applying to more than 2 schools. I got very lucky I was accepted into both and got to choose. However just know that ALL the CSU’s are great schools and all affordable!! Just choose the one that makes the most sense for you! (I.e. distance, program time frame, etc). I chose csula because it’s the closest CSU to where I live. Most people like CSULB because it’s a shorter program (5 semesters versus 6), however, it’s shorter because it’s harder! Also it is important to contact faculty of the CSU’s to see where your clinical sites will be at. CSULB had some clinical’s that were 1 hour and 30 mins away from my house! Unlike CSULA where the clinical sites are between 7-30 mins away from my house. It’s really up to you on which school is best. CSU’s in general are all great schools.  Good luck to you!
