What brought this thread up. You don't work anymore right?
I think some people are prompt, some aren't, some even come in 1/2 hour early! Wouldn't do that myself! Some are neat, some are messy.
Don't worry, the late punches get called on the carpet with the computer big brother spitting out if you punch in a minute late. It will catch up at eval time if not sooner!

I don't still work, but I still think about nursing a lot, and other threads sometimes remind me of things :)
I miss working very much, and just enjoy 'conversation' about a lot of things :)
I'm not that concerned about their paychecks- just the lack of consideration for their co-workers (and this isn't about new nurses, students, CNAs, or anybody specific.... )
I was one of those who came in 30 minutes early, to get a feel for how the day had been, and get my clipboard set to get report- I had my own system and didn't want to get their at the last minute.... if other people did- no problem.... just didn't wait (or expect anybody to wait on me- I remember being late once- alarm didn't go off).
I'm one of those chronically late nurses. I don't know what it is but I'm always 3-10 minutes late. I set my alarm clock early, I'll even get up early but by the time I get out the door I'm barely holding it together. Oddly enough I have great time management on the job. Honestly, it's the sleep thing. I've been a chronic insomniac for my entire life. By the time I finally get some shut eye it's usually 0300, so by the time the alarm rings (at 0600) I've just settled into REM and I press the snooze a few too many times. I HATE that I'm late. I certainly don't think my time is more precious than anyone else's. But there it is....
I usually get there on time, but cut it close with the time clock. What I hate is if someone's late and then starts complaining about their assignment and wants everybody to change their patients around. If your gonna do that, at least please come in early!
The others have already started report, but usually give in cause they don't want the drama. They'll even switch wings to avoid the drama. That is both funny and sad!
If your late please don't ask for favors that only disrupts report and wastes time!
If you get the boss mad it will happen sooner, but they are most annoyed by too much overtime. You will definitely hear about and get docked at eval time if you are known for lots of overtime, at least where I work.
Yeah, the higher ups definitely squawked about OT, or missed meals (to pay the 30 min we didn't get).
The off-going shift was ready to go- done their time; not fair to make them wait ... and when i was coming on, I didn't expect the CN to wait to give report if one of my crew wasn't there- fortunately it didn't happen a lot in the hospital... the LTC/SNF was somewhat worse.
Chronic lateness is unacceptable and rude. Leave earlier. Period.
Chronic latecomers are basically saying to the people who are on time, "Your time is less important." I remember when I was in clinicals, we had an instructor who made it clear that chronic lateness would equal failing. Everyone in my group learned to show up on time.
Now, report starts on time. Anyone who comes late misses out on information.

Everybody runs late once in a while, at some point- traffic accidents, horrible weather, car craps out, etc... but I'll never understand the folks who show up late every *******' day.... The shift starts the same time every day, why is it so hard to get there? To me, it's just passive aggressive rudeness. I used to start report on time (I gave report on all 27 beds- I assessed everybody, did their orders and MARS, and went around with the LVNs who had the direct care, and were great about telling me if anything was going on) - full house or not (and I told mgmt this when I went back to work at a facility I'd worked at before- they said OK) ... there were notes to look at and a kardex... if they wanted 'live' and in person- then show up :)
If the oncoming charge nurse was late (very rare on that floor), I'd wait for her and go over report- she had to know (and wasn't time challenged).
My favorite excuse for a chronically late CNA was "the train goes by every day on my way to work and I'm stuck at the crossing".... hmmm... could ya leave 10 minutes earlier???? Avoid the train altogether?
Chronic lateness reeks of "my time is the most important, so you peons (regardless of job/title) can just wait for my wonderful self to decide to drag my butt to work".....doesn't fly w/me
