cheating classmates!

of course i have a problem with someone cheating off me.. its one thing to be a good citizen.. but my job isnt to be the neigbhorhood watch doog or the nark or classroom security guard. if you read the post many ppl have enough problems and stress as it is trying to pass the classes or GET into Nursing school.. its all nice to "not let cheaters pass" but again karma catches up with you.. im sure ALL of you have enough to worry about then to be constatnly monitoring ppl whom cheat in your class.. besides getting you the personal satisfaction of expelling a student or having him flunk the class.. what else will it do for you? absolutely nothing.. i personally mind my business.. my business as a student first PRIMARY concern is to PASS the classes im In and to succeed.. if students around me want to cheat off me.. go ahead.. cuz i know sure as well they wont see me in the Teas Testing.. in the NCLEX.. in the Job interview .. in year Review.. in the Code Blue.. code Trauma etc..

walomom - i completely agree with you and would have done exactly the same thing you did. i learned the above quote from my high school history class - for those of you who do not know, it was his explanation of how the holocaust happened in nazi germany.

reporting academic dishonesty is not "tattling" or "snitching" - it is about taking responsibility for your own self. you witnessed an action that is not allowed, for very good reasons. whether you tell the student yourself, or your instructor, at least you are taking action to stop a cheater.

i don't understand why this is rocket science to some people, cheating is a serious issue and we must all do what we can to keep honesty intact during academic instruction and testing.

and i hope the one who posted "i've copied people's homework before but i'd never cheat off someone's test" doesn't think he/she is any better than a test-cheater. copying homework is still cheating!

and to caffeinerx, just wondering have you actually seen a cheater throw off the curve for the whole class? in my experience cheaters don't do better than anyone, i mean how could they do better than the person they are cheating off of?

Wake up People, Cheating in Higher Education has been a problem for years. When I was in nursing school students would get jobs in the Copy Room and sell the exams for fifty bucks....

Why do you think you get fingerprinted when you take your board exam? So you don't sneak out and have another person complete (and pass) your boards.Nurses and Nursing Students are no different than the rest of society. As an individual YOU have to make the decicison to do better.

Should we POLICE our classmates? Should we POLICE our fellow nurse?Remember you will take an oath...I feel very strongly about this. We(Nurses) have a Moral and Ethical Obligation to our patients.....You cannot just ignore cheating....it makes for a bad nurse. And yes...these behaviours start in Nursing School.....

ps: most of the cheaters did graduate,I just hope they will never take care of my loved one.......

If I caught someone cheating off of my paper, I would immediately tell them to stop copying my work. I'd probably say it loud enough to embarrass the cheater. Having said that, if I see people cheating, nothing to do with me, its not my duty to inform the professor that people are cheating. I have no time to be caught up in their drama. I highly doubt that they can cheat their way through pre-reqs, cheat their way through nursing entrance exams,nursing schools, clinicals and pass the NCLEX. Its gonna catch up to them sooner or later. My only concern right now, is ME, working as hard as I can to achieve MY goals. Nowhere in my school conduct code does it state that I have a duty to report cheaters. Their character flaw will bite them in the butt sooner or later. I'm not telling anyone to not report cheating if they see it, I know I don't have the time to concern myself with things that have nothing to do with me.

I am lucky that I have a great a physio teacher. She announced on the very first day that she has zero tolerance for cheating, and if she catches you she will do everything she can to get you kicked out of the school. Her rationale? Who wants a person that is willing to cheat, or essentially lie, in a position of responsibility, power, and with access to narcotic drugs?

I know of a person that has admitted to cheating on her exams and is now on a waiting list to get into a nursing program. The act is just an indication of her overall mindset and personality. I am no longer friends with her because of her other actions. Cheating at the college level is "small potatoes" (to quote my physio professor). In the real world, one person with that mindset can cause a lot of harm to a lot of people.

I'm not seeking out cheaters or "policing" my classmates...but yes, I have called a person on it in real life, and let the teacher know. Because I am dedicating time, money and energy into my studies - and Yes, I have to focus on me, and do the very best I can because I also need to make sure I do the best I can for my child, and because my husband is doing a lot so that I can be in nursing school.

And yes, I am willing to make a stand when I see something wrong, and not just ignore it - because I have done it before - in real life at the workplace - and along with other employees that have been willing to speak out, it has removed a highly abusive, incompetent manager that was later discovered to have been embezzling.

So I think you have to question what you are willing - or not willing - to do at the collegiate level. It is just a small reflection of what you will face in your professional life.

My schools Conduct Code did have a clause related to Academic dishonesty(I think that is what they called it) and yes ,I did confront the cheaters and yes, I did inform administraton.

It does not matter what your schools conduct code has listed and what it doesn't. BTW maybe your school should step into reality and adapt a "cheating" clause.

Nursing is one of the most trusted professions,let us keep it like that.

I think you should re-read what I wrote. I never said my school does not have a clause relating to academic dishonesty. I said it did not say that I have a duty to report cheaters.

cheating does concern You,these cheaters will be your Peers.( Imagine you get your first job...and now the cheater works there with you....would you trust this nurse to even answer the call bell for your patient? take a blood pressure? do a temp) Nursing is a team profession,we rely on one another,would you rely on the cheater?We do not live in a vacuum of our own family/experience. I am not telling you how to live life and I am not telling you to report these people....the cheating situation is part of a Larger Picture that IMPACTS patients lifes...
