i will be graduating today as an rn..afteri am off paying my dues as an lvn. although i am excited i can't help to feel a little bummed out, since my friends did not "make it" she got 73% on her final.. granted passing is 75%. my friend had good grades. but she always said she just could not make any sense of pysch. so in the end it was her downfall. she spoke with the instructor who put her foot down and said that she had to repeat the last 9 weeks of the semester agin. now the thing is that another student did not pass as well but his grade got changed...i can testify that. so my friend wants to challenge the boeards. she is an lvn, has been for the past 3 years. all she didn't complete was psych. my question is can she challenge the california rn board. can it be done and how? well i appreciate any info...for now i need some beauty rest...don't want to come out in my pics with bags under my eyes lol

I've never heard of any state allowing you to "challenge" the N-CLEX. In my state (and I was nursing faculty for a few years, so I know a little more about how this works than many), you must be a graduate of a state-accredited nursing program to be eligible to sit the exam, and I believe that's how it works in every state.

I guess I would be concerned that challenging the NCLEX would lead to everyone doing it. Why the objection to repeating the last 9 weeks? Psych is involved in a lot of stuff across the discipline - so it is important. Good luck to your friend.

Making sure this is correct...your friend did not pass nursing school, correct? Then yeah, she shouldn't challenge the boards. You get psych patients everywhere. Had a peds pt who was a cutter, but was on our floor b/c she had an infection due to cutting. Had a herion addict during med/surg rotations who had an abcess from shooting up wrong. Psych patients are everywhere, and I believe all patients have some kind of issues (I know I do! :chuckle ) -Andrea

In my state, years ago, you could challenge the NCLEX-PN but not for a long time now (probably since before a lot of you were born)

You must be a graduate of an approved school before you can take the boards in every state I have worked in. Oh, Ky, Fl, Al, SC. I know that's not a lot, but enough.

Nurses from other countries, with education and licensure from their country can challenge the boards, but that's the only way I know of that it can be done.

The only state that I know of that is an exception is California. It may not help the friend of the original posting though. CA allows LVN's (and only LVN's) to complete the "30 unit option." It consists of your hardcore Med/Surg, Psych, Peds, OB, etc. theory and clinicals but not all of the other general ed. stuff like in the ADN program. You would not be a graduate from the school that provided the coursework but you are eligible to sit for CA NCLEX-RN exam. Most community colleges in CA that have an ADN program provide this option for LVN's.

The problem here would be for those who wish to practice outside of CA. Since you would not be a "graduate of an approved RN program" other states may give these people trouble in obtaining RN licensure.

I know about this because I almost did it myself when I was going through LVN-RN program. The reason I didn't do it is I figured by the time you did all the nursing stuff they wanted from you, why not just finish the ADN degree with a couple more English and whatever other general ed stuff they wanted you to complete. But even this option would require the psych theory and clinical to be passed prior to sitting for NCLEX.

A different thought: A lot of times it is a skill of "taking the test" and not necessarily knowing the subject matter.

Challenging the Board for taking the NCLEX would be a concern to be figured out bu contacting the BON.

I would recomend you friend look at a Kaplan Review or other type of NCLEX review for test taking tips on psych Q's.... Have her SIT in the instructors office at every oppourtunity to gain insight and help on the subject matter if she needs to repeat.

If she has to repeat, so be it. She will be a better nurse for it.

I believe the LVN board might be challenged in some states because it is a vocational license. The RN is a professional license and I doubt it can be challanged anywhere. She just needs to buckle down and study. Maybe get a tutor. As stated above, psych is extremely important. Therapeutic communications can be applied to anyone. When loved ones are ill, and anxiety is running high, that is a good time to use what you learned in psych!

If they did not complete a peds, mental health, or maternal health rotation then they are not permitted to even sit for the boards. Canadians used to get credit for their boards but now with the new Visa Screen requirements, they must also sit for the the NCLEX exam to get their certificate. Either NCLEX or CGFNS exam is accepted. But they do not challenge, either their schooling is accepted or it is not.

I stand corrected. It used to be called challenging the boards in Florida, the only state I have worked with a nurse that I knew had come from another country. She said she challenged the boards. She was a nurse midwife in ??? (English owned Island, I don't remember which one.) When she came to Fla, she was only allowed to challenge the NCLEX-PN. Maybe it depends on the country in which you are educated. England (at least did) educate their nures quite differently that we did. Even our nursing education has changed drastically since the mid 80s.

are you talking about challenging nclex...or challenging nursing school......and dont testify to anything...regardless......its all about you..even if she is a good friend.

I dont think you can challenge the RN boards in any state. An LPN and an RN are not the same thing. I am not saying that one is a better or worse nurse than another, but thier education is different. Similar, but different none-the-less. If I was a paralegal for 5 years, does that mean I should be able to take the Bar exam? Working for a law firm may make me very knowledgable about the practice of law, but if I want to sit for the bar exam, I need to go to law school first. Its the same thing. I was an LPN before I was an RN, and although there were many things that were similar, RN school was much more in depth than LPN school was. I though for sure that when I went into RN school that I would coast through, I sure got a reality check!
