Hello, I have been an RN on a superbusy MedSurg/Oncology floor in a small hospital for 2 years. Everyday when Im on my way to work, i repeat a mantra "Im gonna have a great day", it just doesnt work anymore. i am just looking for suggestions about what other jobs RN's hold and how they compare...i honestly am not sure what else to do besides hospital nursing and im sure thats pretty much the same all over..sucky. Please share your experience in other nursing arenas with me!! i truly do love being a nurse, but i dont feel like i get to do that at all, just running around all day on the phone, back and forth.....no quality pt care time allotted...HELP!!

I am going to give you a link to another recent "burn out" thread. I think you will find a lot of similarities to your situation in there, plus that is where my most recent post is on the topic :)

no im proud to be a nurse, i love the "idea" of nursing...teaching, caring, comforting, but in the hospital setting, seriously 75% of my day is calling drs, consults, other depts, and charting....that leaves so little time for actual pt care! i just dont know what other avenues i can take where i really can care for pts more? if there is one? but no, i am not tired of being a nurse, i will be a nurse forever...

and also, i have looked it up online. its not about getting a job, im just asking for helpful and friendly advice from nurses who im sure have felt the same way at one time or another. thank you!

You should switch to nights. :)

Less pizza parties, but at least everyone is out of your way :p

I worked as a floor nurse in cardiology for a few years. When I found myself to the point of where I didn't want to go to work anymore I began to look for new job! I work in a large urban hospital, so it was easy for me. I found a job in the cardiac cath lab. I love it! My personal philosophy is when I wake up in the morning and don't want to go to work anymore it is time for a new job. One thing I love about nursing is there ARE so many different things you can do.

Maybe try to sub as a school nurse and see if that floats your boat. I hated the hospital and I am very much happy and fulfilled as a school nurse :)

I am thinking about doing this someday in the more distant future. :)

Have you thought of a different type of nursing? Your med surge/Oncology experience makes you a good candidate for Home Hospice. Being in the patients home gives you more time to "be with" the patient- dont get me wrong, you still have the charting and Dr's calls and there is a new twist of driving from one home to the other daily, but the description of what you like about your job sounds like it could be had in that type of environment.

I know there are a few good hospice companies in your area, couldn't hurt to see what they have to say.

Good luck!

Ditto for me. I graduated with my BSN in May 06 and went to work on a med/surg floor. I only lasted three months. I would stop by the restroom on my way in everyday because I would feel like vomiting. Plus, I did not want to punch in until I absolutely had to.

This is my 3rd school year as a middle school nurse. I work for a large urban district so the pay is pretty good......and I am absolutely spoiled by all the time off.

I stay busy but not overwhelmed, I work with kids of a low socioeconomic status who have little access to health care and feel that I really make a difference in their lives.
