Broke and about to be more broke!

I am just venting but my 4 year old daughter didn't qualify for preK so now she has another year in daycare until she starts kindergarten next year! that's 340 extra a month that we do not have but somehow I know we will make it work but it just stresses me. I've been on summer break working at the daycare to help keep us up but my last day is in two weeks am clinicals start back up. I don't graduate until dec 2013 and I sure wish time would speed up!

I know how you feel I have been working all summer while taking two summer classes and was intending to put the money all towards school but things keep poping and I am not sure how I will make ends meet myself! Just hang in there we made it this far, we are strong! :)

Ugh, I understand as well! My daughter is in preschool, but we have to pay, plus the sitter as well!

Completely understand! I just had to enroll mine in daycare today. My 4(almost 5) year old will be doing preschool there. It's an extra $560 a month!

I'm right there with ya! I have to put my 4 year old daughter in preschool for another year, on top of having my 15 month old in daycare and my 9yo in an after school care program. We are going from comfortable to B-ROKE this first year of NS, thanks to a whopping $1300/month Childcare bill. I'm on the waiting list for NCI Childcare assistance, which will help if it comes through...it should know our bill down to about $600.

I feel you on that one! We have 4 kids. Thankfully the oldest 3 will all be in school this year and if we get approved, the big kids will go to the afterschool program at the boys and girl's club(which is 30$ a month I think!!) We do pay for my 2.5 yr old to go to daycare and that's 360 a month.

It's good to know I'm not alone. I am a mother of four. I graduate in December and I cannot wait. My oldest is going off to college. I thought daycare was expensive, but it was nothing compared to college. Yikes!!! My last semester is a 10 credit hour critical care nursing class, and I will only be able to work one day a week with my other classes. Good luck with your classes! Graduation will be here before you know it.

I am a male nursing student, father of 3. We are priviledged, because my wife is able to stay at home with the kids. I have my own opinions about this subject.

I have traveled into Mexico, Asia, and the Pacific Islands interacting with families from other cultures. It's my impression that we Americans have an upside down concept of parenting. Because we are driven by matieralism we tend to pursue our careers at the expense of spending time with our children. We pay another person to watch the kids for 8 hours a day while we go to work or school.

This sort of parenting is found in other cultures, but is reserved to the upper echelon of society. Usually this is in the form of a nanny or in home care giver providing one on one care. In america we have developed the daycare system involving a few care givers and many children.

At the end of the day all I am saying is that there is no better day care than home. I'm sure glad we made it work...

While that is an interesting perspective, you clearly are not the primary caregiver of the family. It must be lovely to be able to abdicate child care duties to your wife while you pursue your career and schooling.

Unless you're offering to come to my home and watch my children, the best daycare is indeed NOT at home, because no one else will be there.

Nothing personal, nor is there any abdicating of responsibilites. I work extra hard in order to allow my wife to stay at home. Your milage, and opinions, will vary. Cheerio.

Mhmm. I've got my feminist eye on you, buddy.

And I also have a new list of terms I never should have created, and "feminist eye" is officially #1.

So I'm sure that means your wife has no other aspirations than to stay home with the kids? What if she wanted to go to school? Would you have stayed home and watched the kids and let her finish school and have a career in your place? Since someone must stay home with the kids...

And Steph! Where is this feminist eye located exactly??? I think I missed that in A&P 1.
