Im currently working as an ED tech, I need to know if all ED doctors have crappy attitudes and Egos the size of mountains. Nurses who backstabb each other and nagging, complaining techs or is it just were I work. I really want to be a ED nurse, but I am starting to change my mind. HELP:scrying:

No - not all places are like this. If this is the case where you currently work and you want to work as an ER nurse when you get done with school, look elsewhere. I have worked in a couple of ERs in central IL and while just about everyone can get testy once in a while, it should not be a common occurence. Good luck.

For the most part, everyone on our ED night shift plays nicely together - docs, nurses, techs, cleaning staff. We've got two docs I'd rather not work with; but even they aren't horribly nasty. OTOH, I have to say two or three of our docs are extraordinarily kind to patients.
So, do not despair. It isn't all a jungle.

I love ER, the only place to work. I love it. Most of the docs are very good and pleasant. the ones that are not, I generally get them trained in short time. The techs like to work or they dont last long. Same with the nurses, ours is a work ER. Either work or they end up leaving looking for something less challenging. Love having the paramedics around. Starting IV s doing some meds, assisting the nurse. Good team work

I work in a pediatric emergency room and most days I love it. There are only a few of the doctors I would prefer not to work with, most of us work as a team and as an above poster said, when the residents get out of line our head nurse is our biggest advocate and she quickly gets them in line. Don't let this bad experience make you think it's horrible everywhere. I worked at another ER before this one and I can honestly tell you I barely could remember the doctors names and approach them for an order. Where I work now I can approach the doctors, suggest treatments or problems and usually they agree or show me why it isn't right.

IMHO nursing/healthcare as far as the people you work with is pretty much like any other field we have the good the bad and the ugly.
I have worked some places where everyday seemed like a mini episode of Survivor-constant backstabbing, politics, and never knowing you to trust; on the other hand I have worked places where everyone was one big happy family. I think it comes down to how you are able to deal with people in these situations.

we work as a team.. no one is better than the next... well... we have one doc who thinks hes "all that" but we always put him in his place and we all laugh and have fun....
im sorry that you don't have the same experience in your ER.. but no..... not all ER's are like that...

Definitely not all like that, brandi. I am an ER (mental health) tech as well; new to this department but I must say that everyone has been very kind and accommodating for me. It is tough to go to a new job or department and not know where everything is, etc. I just tell any nurse or tech I am working with when I am not familiar with something and ask that they please let me know if there is anything I should be doing that I am not doing, anything they need help with, and if I screw anything up to please let me know so I can LEARN! I find that most all of the nurses and docs I work with are quite kind as long as I offer my help, am polite, and stay out of the way. They are BUS-Y!

Our ED has been really pressured lately...hospital wide lay-off's, new director, new schedule, and decrease in pt census has really put a damper on all staff. I work with some really wonderful people and some who would like to roll you under the bus!

Our ER is great. We all get along and our ER docs are great. Of course we all have our days and at times it can get heated but we pull through it and move on. In general we always have a good time together, it's like a 2nd family to me. Good luck to you.

Brandylove,
ED work is stressful and to be perfectly honest, sometimes tempers do flair, or there's the "cluster" mentality in my opinion at times. I have been on the giving as well as the receiving.....Teamwork though is such a nice thing and if you can help to boost that aspect without being sucked-in to flairing tempers, clusters, yet build teamwork instead....it's so much nicer.
