I am an Australian RN and want to work in USA. Sadly my qualifications do not include 2 courses required by NY State, ie Pediatrics and Obstetrics/Midwifery. Since I can't find any place here in Australia to do these (40 hours theory and 40 hours clinical each), I am now thinking about moving to USA, and while working (perhaps as an LPN?) I could do the required courses there. Can anyone tell me if this is practicable/possible? are there any colleges/universities (preferably in upstate New York) where I could do them?? I would be extremely grateful for any advice/information/suggestions. Visa is not a problem, I already have one.

Hold one, before you do anything lol! i had to go through the same thing as you!! Deakin University in Melbourne deals with this sort of thing. I did psych and maternity as i did not have enough clinical hours. It took me 1 semester to do both subjects and you can do it through distance education. Its definitely worth it, and the lady who is in charge of this is so lovely!! Pvt msg me if you can and i can give you her contact info!!

Hey there!
Just thought I'd reply to your post and let you know that I am trying to do the same thing as you. I am a new grad RN working in Sydney and I am moving to New York in March to be with my partner.
I have applied to the CGFNS and haven't heard anything back yet.
I guess since you were told you have to make up courses, I will too. What uni did you go to? How soon did the CGFNS get back to you?
Have you sat the NCLEX? I am really scared about that...I've heard it's very difficult!?!?
I would really appreciate having someone to contact that is going through the same process I am. Do you have any idea how long it will all take before we are able to actually work? Are you going through an agency or doing in alone?
Any info/ideas would be so greatly appreciated...
Thanks so much and good luck :nuke:

I doubt you will be able to move to the US by March. I presume you are going to use the E3 visa and for that you need to meet requirements, pass NCLEX, Visa screen certificate and letter of employment. CVS takes on average 8 months before you get eligibility to sit NCLEX (as long as you meet requirements) and even if you look to another state you still have to complete CVS if foreign trained and they will not issue a license without it

Hi AussieRNinHI,
I am a new graduate Australian nurse in Canada and I believe we have the same problem here with our lack of courses covered in our undergrad degree (obs, paeds and mental health). Would you mind forwarding me the details for the lady at Deakin that handles these courses as I'd much rather complete them in Australia than Canada.
Many thanks!!

I have moved this thread to the International Forum since it is specific to working in the US and not in Australia.
Each and every state in the US as well as every province in Canada actually require clinical and theory hours in those two subjects. It is definitely not specific to NY.
You do need to be aware that these hours must be completed before one is given permission to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam. It is impossible to write the NCLEX-PN exam for licensure as an LPN without having these courses done as well. They are required for that license as well. You also cannot obtain a visa to work in the US with just the LPN license. The green card as well as the E-3 treaty visa require the RN after your name with licensure in the US needed. Not sure licensure in Australia as an RN.
You can complete the hours in Australia or come to the US under a student visa and complete both of the needed courses. However, you do need to be aware that you will not be able to work at all while in the US completing these two courses.
Best of luck to you.

I doubt that "sydneysista" would meet E3 requirements if she is a new grad nurse - you need to be a specialist.
NCLEX should not be too hard for you - I was out of school for 11 years when I sat NCLEX last year. I studied the Saunders book for a few months and did TONS of practice questions.
