All nurses hate their job

Published

Hi all,

I went to learn CPR and can now perform and help others if in need. Our class was fairly large one with 25 or so people. Mostly nurses a couple of them were fall nursing students and some common people. Class was enjoyable and great.

When we introduced ourselves and mingled before the session. There wasn't one nurse there that did not hate their job. They were from various hospitals and different areas. In uniform they all shook their heads and said if we knew what we were entering once we spoke and said we were entering nursing school. I had a 2 nurses come up andask why I wanted to enter this field.

This has my brain spinning, will I dislike my job as much as them.

But I think its what you make out of it.

I know not all nurses out there hate their jobs. I just had to get this negative experience off my chest.

I try to be as specific as possible when I speak about parts of nursing I do not like!

I certainly hope you remain optimistic about nursing. I have been a nurse now for over three years and if anything, I am even MORE excited about it, and love my job even more than I did when I started. I think you will find the vast majority of nurses love, or at least LIKE what they do. :specs: Yes, it's a hard job, and yes, some days are rougher than others, but on the whole, it's a wonderful profession and I am very VERY pleased I've chosen it for career #2.

If you will look into different fields you will see this is not something known only to the nursing field. Check out a pharmacy board for example and you will see the same complaints. I think there are some people that are never happy no matter what. The grass is always greener for them. Nursing is a tough job. My mom is a nurse and sometimes they work her tail off. However, she was also a secretary for many years. She said her worst day in nursing is still better than her best day as a secretary. In my experience those that complain a lot are those that do not have a lot in the way of experience with other professions. Some people complain about having to be on the go and stand for so many hours at a time. I have had jobs where I stood on my feet 8 to 16 hours a day and got paid minimum wage. You just have to take everything with a grain of salt. Besides, if they were really that miserable and hated their jobs so badly, why are they still doing it? Actions speak a lot louder than words when it comes to things like this. They are still nurses for a reason.

I have had 15 years experience as a nurse. 13 as a LPN and 2 as an RN. I don't hate my job. I like the profession very much and find it very rewarding. The problem is not liking or disliking the profession as much as the stress and demands placed on many hospital staff these days. Many times I have felt as though I was placed in unsafe situations for my patients only to be more productive for the hospital. Many hospitals have lost funding from the state and to compensate for the loss they cut staff and take short-cuts. It has a negative affect on staff and often nurses feel invaluable, unjustified in their feelings, and stressed that they don't have the time they would like to spend enjoying the profession they chose. In my years as a nurse things have changed alot. Not always for the best either. I think it is a shame these nurses targeted you like this. However, I think they are just releasing some of the anguish they have over the current trend in healthcare off to you. If nursing is what you want to do. Go for it. Make the decision yours and don't be influenced by burned out nurses.

I worked the ER for a long time and when I first started I loved it. Then after about 10 years I started to really dislike it. I changed specialties about 2 years ago and have renewed my love of nursing. I think nurses, like every other profession, get burned out. The wonderful thing about nursing is the almost unlimited oppurtunities available. Please do not allow some peoples negativity affect your desire to become a nurse. It was the best decision I have ever made.

I can honestly say that there ARE certain days when I really dislike my assignment of pts. Some can be very, very difficult to deal with. Some you can never please no matter how far you bend over backwards to accomidate them. Those are the days I truly struggle with just trying to get my shift done. But, then, I have really good days that my pts seem to appreciate things I do for them. Those good days make up for the bad ones. So, all in all, I don't hate my job. It has it's struggles just like any other career. I'm glad I chose my profession. Mainly, because we all know that not everyone can do what we do. It takes a special person to go into to work everyday, not knowing what you might be up against. The challenge is what keeps me going. I never get bored.:D

I have been in Nursing for 15 years and still Love it!!!!

There have been times where the stress gets to me or I start to feel stagnant but find a switch to another job or area of the hosp keeps things fresh.

I have been a travel nurse for 3 years now and LOVE it!!!

I don't have to deal with the politics of the floor or hospital. I can do my job and go home. If the hosp is Bad I am only there for 13 weeks and can find something else.

I LOVE nursing!!! :redbeathe It is such a Great job!!!!:yeah:

I love nursing. I hate unsafe patient assignment, urealistic expectations from managers, excessive duplicate documentation, mandatory overtime, having my shift cancelled...etc.

I LOVE nursing though I do sometimes dislike my job. This is just not a career for everyone and some people do not like it but remain for the financial security. Don't let comments like those get you down, though. It is a shame when we are in such a shortage that is predicted to become worse over time that we have nurses discouraging others from entering the profession. How are we ever going to attract more nursing students if we keep belittling our profession and voicing only the negative aspects of this career? Nursing is indeed very rewarding and I cannot see myself doing anything else for a long time to come.

I love nursing. It is the greedy employers, the rude patients, arrogant doctors, evil coworkers, and the multitude of ignorant regulations that I hate. It is often hard to distinguish exactly what the problem is, so saying "I hate nursing" is what comes out.

Work is work. If they didn't have to pay you it would be a hobby.

Every job is going to have its share of bad days.

Nursing has enough good days for most people to keep us going year after year.
