Hello everyone,

I am 22 (23 in April) and single in nursing school. I am in my second semester of the BSN program at my university. I feel almost everyone in my level is either married or in a relationship. Should I feel bad about this? I always wanted to get married and have children but I'm afraid it's not going to happen in the future.

Is it bad to be by yourself (some of my friends like to make a big deal out of it)?

be yourself, do what you want to do! it is probably a little easier to get through school if you don't have to worry about kids, spouse, significant other, etc. if you are happy where you are right now in life, that is what matters! you are young! enjoy life and do what makes you happy. there is time for everything.

Better to be by yourself than in a relationship just because you want to be in a relationship. That is, be with someone b/c you want to be with them, not because you want to be with someone and Joe Schmo isn't too shabby. Actually, I would say that if you ask this question, it's a sure sign you should be single and date for fun and experience. Don't put so much pressure on yourself! Oh yeah, and your friends aren't fully enjoying their relationships if they can't understand the importance of every point in life, even the single years.

Girl please!!! Be happy you don't have the excess responsibilties. I am 27 in my second semester of an ADN program and have it a little easier than my married with children classmates. I admire them for what they do. One girl in my study group has to find time to study and time to spend with her husband and children and also time to fulfill all those wifely duties. Forget that. Be happy your not in a relationship or married w/ kids. It's more time to study and not have to worry about having dinner on the table, picking up bobby and susy from soccor practice, and making sure your husband goes to bed with a smile on his face:chuckle

Don't get me wrong. I work part time, and have a boyfriend (who I see once, maybe twice a week) but he's in school too so there's no pressure. When I do get to spend time with him we are both usually studying.

Just be happy being young and single. You have plenty of time to be in a relationship just wait for it. It'll happen. In the mean time do what you want to do, when you want to do it!!

Of course not! Why would you think that? Good grief, you're 22, not 60. Why would anyone expect you to be married or in a serious relationship?

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! You are only 22. You are way too young to be saying it may never happen for you. My advice is to focus on school, get the best grades you can, maybe even party and enjoy yourself! Enjoy having no responsibilities and being able to nap, study, and all that stuff whenever you damn well please!

I am 23. I have two beautiful boys, and a wonderful husband, but school is hard with a lot of added responsibilities. So to someone like you, I'd say just enjoy life and once you get out of school you will have all the time in the world for relationships, children, whatever you want!

I am on the other end of the spectrum as you. I wake at 5:30AM to get both my kids to preschool/daycare (which cost over $1100 a month, not to mention MY tuition). I go to the library and study and I have my full time program starting in 2w. I get the kids, go home, try and study, clean my house, make dinner, tend to everyone's demands and try to stay sane by the end of the day.

So if your "friends" try and make a big deal about you being single, I'd say maybe they are jealous. They probably have a lot more stress to deal with and it makes them feel better if they rag on someone else.

I have kids/marriage/house and a ton of things to deal with. DOn't get me wrong, I love my family with ALL my heart, but I'm just trying to point out the positives of being single and stressfree in school for someone like you.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being single at the age of 22, or while in nursing school!!!

Get your education, enjoy your life, then find someone to start a family with. You have plenty of time.

I have alot of respect for people who can have a serious relationship or a spouse and children while attending school. I never could have done it!

Just because you're single while you're in nursing school, doesn't mean stuff won't happen! A guy and girl in my class met, and got to know each other while they had clinical together. They got married a year later. I'm dating one of the first level nursing students, and couldn't be more in love (he's my answered prayers, my biggest blessing...) :loveya: The only single guy left in my class is dating a girl from the first level group. Two girls are dating someone they met during clinicals (one's a nurse, another has went on several dates with a resident).

However, we're lucky because right now it's all nursing. I get to spend time with my honey and study at the same time!

While I was single, I did get lonely sometimes, but it definitly made studying a lot easier. I was able to stay on track more. And like someone else said...you're young!!! -Andrea

The key to having a spouse while in nursing school is to have a partner, not a burden! :rotfl:

Kids? I could never have kids while in school. I don't know how those students do it.

Also, you say you think it won't happen for you. You're trying too hard! You shouldn't be looking for a relationship. Good relationships just happen. They bloom, to be cliche. Just seek out a good time and surround yourself with good people. You can't go looking for love or for commitment and you don't want someone who is doing the same.

Should you feel bad? Heavens girl. Feelings are neither good nor bad and there is no one right way to feel about anything. Feelings are what they are... feelings.

What's imporant is how YOU feel about being single. Now having said that, I'll tell you how I feel as a single woman in nursing school. I FEEL GREAT!!!! Now remember, I'm 50 and have already done the marriage, kids, dog and two car and divorce thing. I have no one to pick up after. No one to have to worry about neglecting. No one to worry about pleasing or displeasing. I may not always feel this way but right now, and for the last 10 years, it's been wonderful.

Nursing school can be tough on a relationship anyway - I wouldn't worry about it. Have fun! :)

My BSN program is just the opposite - most everyone is young and unattached... out of 50 of us, I'd say only about 5 are married, and even fewer have kids! :)
