I knew a lady who continually failed her boards (she ended up passing the 5th time)..and the LTC facility that she worked in was having some issues with her (incorrect med admin, not knowing what meds were, etc) so they told her that they weren't going to have her license pulled but that she would need to work as a CNA - she refused, and went to a drs office as an LPN.

A very good and smart friend of mine failed the first time due to a learning disability. She lost her direct entry position into SICU but the hospital (sorry, I don't know about LTC) had her work as a tech until she passed, then she went to cardiac. She's really happy there now and has every intention of making her way back to SICU by next year. It wasn't that big a deal after all, you know!

My last facility several nurses were hired as GN's and when they failed their boards, they were allowed to continue in similar capacity with a few restrictions,(kinda like a nurse tech role) until they passed. It worked OK and they passed the next time. :)

It's three fails and then you have to redo your educaton in my province. You got paid as a CNA up until you passed. Pass on first attempt you got your LPN back pay backdated to original hire. Require more than one attempt, paid as CNA until you passed. But three strikes and you were out...

A couple of the GN's failed their boards in my hospital but then worked as GN's until they passed the 2nd time. I guess the GN would be almost like an LPN. Education worked with both of them for a short time and they both passed on round two.

Sometimes getting a little more floor experience besides what you get in clinicals helps. Alot of the questions we had when I took boards were judgement call questions and patient care questions. I was lucky to have passed the first time around. In the facility I worked at as a GN, they allowed the GN's who failed boards the first time to continue in that roll untill they passed.

My sister in law failed the first time. I was in shock she failed because she had studied so hard and is very smart. She graduated with honors. But the hospital that she worked for was nice about it and gave her either 60 days or 90 days to pass it but busted her down to a cna and the pay too. She was not happy about that happening because she was relying on the pay of being a RN and had just moved back into the area and needed the money but she got by and passed the second time. She scored really high too.
