Hi there, I was wondering how you all are paying for school right now? Edpecially those who are working on prereq's. I'm married and work as a nanny and my husband is a teller. We make ok money. But I want to go back to school this summer in june, which means I need to quit my wrk since they need some one in daytime. I will rob. Get a part time but my focus will be def. School. I filed fafsa and my efc score was 0 so I will be able to get at least money for my tuition. But I want to take out a loan to pay bills and rent. My husband's income alone won't cover everything. Would that be a bad idea? How lond does it take to receive a loan? Once I get on a waiting list do I have to pay the money right away? Or am I still consider to be enrolled in a school? I am suer stressed. Plz help. Thank u very much for ur time

I love chihuahuas, too! They are the best dogs in the world, imho. As a single nursing student, I share concerns with you on the money issue. When I opened the acceptance letter today for nursing school, the first thought that crossed my mind after the dancing and screaming subsided, was, "How in the world will I pay for this?" Student loans seem to be the best option for me since I have a degree already. Also, I work in a hospital that will work with me on hours during nursing school. Maybe you could find a hospital job to pay the bills and gather helpful experience. Good luck to you!

The best thing you can do is to write down all your questions so you don't forget any, and go in and talk to the Financial Aide office at your school. Every school handles loans and stuff their own ways, they will be able to steer you in the right direction.

Right now I work at a hosptial that pays for 6 hours of schooling per semester. I do not need any prereq's so that leaves me only taking the nursing courses which range from 7 hours fall and spring semester the first year to 11 hours the next. I will only have to pay out of pocket for 1 hour this coming year and I guess save what I can for the next years as well as use student loans as a back up if I need to.

I will pay with savings and student loans. And to answer your question if you get federal loans you'll need to remain enrolled for a min of 6 credits/semester in order to keep them in deferment. So if you finish your prereqs and end up on a waitlist then you'll have to take courses in something else that interests you. Work towards a second degree or cert ... or if there are additional prereqs you need for a BSN then you can be working on those while you wait.

I got really lucky; I have worked here at the same hospital for 12 years now - 4 years ago, they offered the program where you work for 20 hours and get paid for 40 while you're going to school. They pay for your expenses and you agree to work for them for 3 years after you get your RN, which is fine, because after 12 years, I'm not planning on going anywhere else. They reimbursed my tuition and books while I was doing my prereqs and my boss has been a wonderful person through it all. I owe a lot to this place, couldn't have done it otherwise.

Next Spring (i hope, if not fall) when I go to a different (WAY more expensive) school I will tap into the post 9/11 GI Bill which will do a lot to defray my not working. It pays for school 100% and even gives me a monthly BAH stipend, as well as a book stipend.

But, I had to do military service to get this benefit. It's not a horrible option, it's also useful if you stack up student loans, but I want to save the student loan option for graduate school (I should still have some MGIB available by then too).

I feel your anxiety. I too had the euphoria of being accepted into an ABSN program. Now the reality of finances is setting in. I am trying not to worry and just rest in the comfort that God has brought me this far. It will work out some how. I am working occassionally parttime at night. I don't qualify for grants and so I will be dependent on what I can qualify for as far as student loans. I pray that it is enough. I had a dissapointment yesterday when I got notification that I did not receive an $8000 scholarship that I had interviewed for. I am thinking about signing a work commitment with a local hospital for a year in return for a $4000 stipend to help out with expenses. It isn't a lot for a year work commitment, but every little bit helps and if I get it I will at least be assured to have a job after I finish nursing school. I will definitely pay attention to this thread to see if anyone else has suggestions. I start school June 1st so time is of the essence.:icon_roll

I worked as a paralegal for ten years and decided last May to quit and go back to school full time and pursue my nursing career. I lived off of savings until now. Now I am babysitting (I get to study while the baby sleeps) and living off of loans to make ends meet. I'm hoping that by the time my second year of nursing school comes, I might qualify for some additional financial aid, but this year I don't because of what I made last year working as a paralegal.

I try not to worry about how I'll swing it for the next two years, but I know that somehow it will all work out.

That is how I plan to pay also, with my GI bill and college fund. I didn't give it much thought while in the military, but I am so happy I went that route a few years ago. My tuition is one less thing I have to worry about.

Well for the first time I will actually get Fin. Aide. I am stoked, I just found out today, I will be getting about 6500 in grants for the year and than my student loans. I won't qualify next year so I am going to enjoy it while I get it!

What kind a job I can get in a hospital if I didn't start my nursing school yet...in order to have possibility of them paying for sime of it???

Right now Im looking at volunteering in some hospitals to get in that enviroment...

I also will have the financial problem...I need to work to pay my bills and then school??? How will I ever be able to do it???

It's really scary and on top of everything I am foreign and English is my second language...

Please help...

Hi barankasia, I am not sure too how u can get a job at hospital without anyexperiences. But I'm sure that there are an opportunity wrking at hospitals. Here in az I thinlk once u finish a prereqs u get to apply for the fellowshi program which u get to have an interview and if u pass it u sing a contract with them that u are gona wrk for them for three years following graduation. Plus they will pay for ur schooling. U should try looking into things like that. Ii haven't started prereqs yet. But I'l get a financial aid and will get a loan to pay bills. It is very hard to go to school and make living. This is my first time I mactually going back to school on my own. I'm married and have to worry how to make a living without any suort from my parents. I'm very scrared too to take a leap of going to this field and worry what if it diesnt wrk out and just end up have a huge debt. I am from japan and speak english as a secoond language too. But I wana believe I can do it and will do it. And hope everything wrks out for u!!
