Oh please people stop it.From high school to college to medical assistant school to now LPN school people have been eating in class and I have continued to maintain a 4.0 grade point average.Someone eating quietly when they are obviously hungry should not disable anyone from learning I have never heard that in my life.I am not making excuses for anyone or attacking anyone on this post but please people give it a rest and just finish nursing school whether or not someone that sits behind you has a dam burger!Geeeeeeeeeeshhhhhhh

I've already graduated and am working, and sorry, but in my experience, the people who were unable to follow simple class rules like "no eating in class" were also the ones inconsiderate enough to CHOMP their food during class. And yes, our school had rules. Thank goodness only one instructor opted to not enforce it.

If you can't concentrate if people are eating, then how can you expect to function in an emergency situation in a hospital with tons of people shouting orders, getting this, getting that...how can you expect to concentrate on what you are supposed to do next if you are so easily distracted?????

I dunno. Somehow I manage.

Now I must ask: if you can't go for a two hour block of time without eating, how can you expect to make it through a day where it is not uncommon to have to work 8-9 hours on your feet before you can break for food?

Thats exactly why you shouldn't give a flying hoot about who is eating> Come on get over it this is soooooooooooooooo ridiculous that people have to pay attention to what other people do.You control your destiny not anyone else and the fact that you have to make other people in a classroom an excuse for you failing is beyond belief. Get it together I personally do not have salisbury steaks in class but I have seen it done and I still walk out with a 98% on almost every test and have never had to complain about another person it's childish GET OVER IT YOU ARE A NURSE NOW WORRY ABOUT WHEN YOUR PATIENTS EAT!

You assume somehow I failed nursing school??? Haha! Hysterical! I graduated in the top 5 of my class, which had 110 graduates.

I don't really have any interest in continuing this silly argument. I just wanted to state that even if people don't actually say something about your eating in class, that doesn't mean they aren't thinking it.

Because when I go to work, they are not paying me to eat and with nursing, I may or may not get a break...and if I want to keep the job, I need to work my life around my job.

With school...I pay for school, they don't pay me. My school permits eating and drinking in class and there is nothing in our student handbook for the college, nursing program, nor class syllabus against it.

It boils down to: I did it occasionally because I could...we all did at one time or the other...I guess I was just fortunate to go to a school where no one cared about things so petty. If one of us were running late (and almost every day, out of over 40 students, usually someone was), the instructor never even asked why...they even told us, "We are all adults, if you couldn't be here, we are sure there is a reason."

We had ONE student that was continuously absent from school....and she didn't pass..so the situation took care of itself.

In fact, we don't even have an attendance policy because they tell you on Day 1: If you don't come, don't expect to pass because tons of material is reviewed and it's your responsibility to get it from a classmate.

The only attendance that is required is for clinicals because the Board of Nursing requires a certain number of hours to be logged before they can award the degree.

It goes back to my original point: SCHOOL is not a WORK.

Second, you are picking my previous posts to pieces to make your "point." The fact is, it is 190% true that a nursing program can be reported.

YOU are the one that posted, "Where is this program because I want to report it" ....YOU posted that...not me...after I made a post about eating and drinking in class and occasionally having to be late. No where did I mention that other students weren't learning, complaints were lodged against me or other students doing the same thing...nowhere did I say anything about an instructor ever having a problem with it.

Nowhere did I say that the overall program was suffering.

In fact, you even created a new post to mention that after a member said, "Report them for what???"

I never specifically said a program would be suspended for allowing food and drink in class. I was making a broad statement about a laissez-faire program in general which, it can be assumed if the program fails to maintain order in one area, they probably fail to do so in others.

Sure you did....you said that the BON would launch an investigation whenever situations were taking place that was "detrimental to learning". I asked to to quote the source for your belief...and you have still be unable to do that.

Now you are stating that a program can lose it's accreditation for "not maintaining order"....where in the BON accreditation standards does it state that a program has to maintain strict order during class?

My point is...you are making huge, massive assumptions on an incorrect belief that has no foundation and doesn't exist...that isn't a personal attack...that is a fact. Do you really and truly believe that you can pick up the phone, call the BON and say, "People are constantly coming late to class, there are so many distractors during class I can't listen to lecture, can you please do something about it?"....you would probably have to wait for the regulator to stop laughing before she could tell you that if you don't like your nursing program, you are free to go somewhere else..and they will defer you to research their NCLEX pass rate and if they are maintaining teaching the correct curriculum and maintaining proper clinical hours as required by the state. Again, how a college gets from point A to point B is up to the college...the BON does not regulate that.

Finally, it doesn't matter what you think is hard to "report" about a program. If enough students reported a program, no matter how "minor" YOU think it is, it can prompt a survey team to be sent to the program to investigate the complaints. Most likely a "food and drink" complaint would not go far, but a complaint about suffering student education might, wouldn't you say?

Here, you are changing the subject. We started off talking about eating, drinking during class, occasionally coming in late...YOU are the one that brought up reporting a nursing progam for it...no one else did...that was you...and you don't even go to my school but yet insisted you could report it, even after other posters stated that YOUR complaint would have no basis and that this huge investigation would be launched.

So now you are backtracking and talking about bona-fide academic issues...students banding together and launching a formal complaint with the BON...which students are going to have to be very, very specific about and I can assure you....would have to be major before the BON is going to investigate anything....and then you stated that eating/drinking "wouldn't get very far"....but only a few posts ago, jeez, you were practically going off about how a whole program could lose their accreditation over it.

We even had a student that showed up 45 minutes late to a two hour lecture....but she wrecked her car on the way to school and had the tow truck to bring her to class so someone else would take her home...b/c she wanted to be there.

Wow! That's just ridiculous! Um. . .seriously? If I was hiring, and the choice was between her and you, all else being equal, which one would I hire. . .?:thnkg: HER!! When did all go so terribly wrong?

LOL....yes, I was serious.

But...my point in mentioning that story was that no one asked her why she came in late...now, if you didnt know she had an accident (which none of us knew until the end of the lecture), some people might have said, "Well, the nerve of her coming in 45 minutes late!" or even worse...a professor that locks the door at the start of lecture.

I would also like to point out, that the accident was minor...we live in a very safe area where cars don't get stripped/abandoned, but you'll also wait half-the day for a tow truck because there are very few of them around here...some of us have had car break downs along the way and if another student sees them, they just pick them up and we come back to get the car later.

Very, very few of us ever missed class...and the ones that routinely did...didn't make it. My first year, I didn't miss any...the second year, I only missed when one of my children was very ill and it would have been irresponsible for me as a parent, to put that off on someone else.

Apples and oranges.

People learn differently. Some people are not distracted by noises, smells, or visual stimuli, while others are. It drives me absolutely up the wall when someone next to me is crinkling food wrappers and making chewing noises in the classroom during lecture. Personally, I feel that unless one has a legitimate medical need to eat whenever and wherever, one should make the time/effort to meet one's nutritional needs outside of class.

A code is a completely different situation altogether, and you simply cannot compare someone eating during lecture with being a member of the code team. Besides, in a well run code, you do not have "tons of people shouting orders". If that's how codes are run at your facility, then you guys need more mock codes and ACLS training.
