Working during nursing school?

Published

I decided that I won't be working during school at least this semester. I might babysit here and there to pick up some extra money but I've saved up enough from working all summer to last me. I'm lucky enough that my parents help me out still. Is anyone else in this situation? Whenever I tell someone I'm not working they act like I'm spoiled and a brat. I just don't want to fail nursing 1 again-it happened last year because I got too overwhelmed.

Our school strongly suggests we don't work ...especially not full time, during our schooling. For those that do have part time jobs, they seem to be the ones that struggle in class. We do have a select few that can juggle it all but if you're already concerned then I wouldn't think twice about it. I mean the whole reason you're going to school is to GET a job so that would be kind of rediculous for them to think you're spoiled. ;)

Many people choose not to work during nursing school, so your not alone. Most of the people that have jobs, they are usually low stress jobs that allow them to study at work so there pretty much in the same boat. Nursing school is already stressful enough for me and i'm horrible at managing my time, so getting a job is not happening for me either. Thankfully my brother & sister makes good money and supports me. Gotta luv your family!

You know I havent worked since I got into nursing school and the second someone tells me im spoiled I start to ignore them. The greatest gift my parents are able to give me is that I can go through school without having to worry about money. I dont abuse the situation and Im still required to pull good grades. Walking out of school with Zero debt and a BSN will be the best gift I can get from them no matter what

only you know the workload you can handle. while some can work while in school, others cannot. and you mentioned that you failed the first time?? you definitely dont want to put urself in the same position again :nono:

i just started nursing school yesterday and i do envy some of my classmates that arent working or dont have to work lol ... thats not the situation for me. i have to work the first semester, then ill probably go on leave for the second semester in order to concentrate more (and plus its supposed to get harder) .... but someone like me can handle heavy loads. with my first degree, i took 5-6 classes while working full time. dont ask me how LOL, i was a zombie!! but i handled it and did what i had to do to graduate. and i actually got good grades. i know nursing is a different ball park so i will make adjustments. but trust me if i didnt HAVE to work, i WOULDNT!

Personally, I need to work. I have a good chunk saved up but I'd rather work and be able to save up money. In my program it seems to be the opposite, that those who don't work end up with worse grades. I like that I have an outlet from school work. I work as a CNA at a hospital but they are very flexible with my schedule to give me the perfect one to work with.

yea my director at my job has agreed to flexible with me @ work as well .. and i work for a bank lol .. i cant ever understand how some students dont work and get bad grades and i work 40+ a week and get a better grade. i mean i have a FULL plate and other students get to go home and have all the time in the world on their hands and then ask ME if i can help them?? sorry just venting.. :lol2:

I envy people in your situation! If I could go to school without working, I'd do it in a heartbeat. That being said, I don't think someone is spoiled because they don't have to work. They're just blessed. I was forced to seek other employment because my current manager won't be flexible with my schedule. Luckily I'm in the process of (hopefully!) getting hired at a peds hospital. They've already assured me that accomodating clinical schedules won't be a problem.

If it wasn't for rent, food, gas, electricity, insurance (am diabetic so great health insurance is a must), and the basic necessities of life I'd drop working LOL But, working at a pediatric hospital will get my foot in the door - they love hiring PCAs who are also nursing students.

Personally, I think people that scoff at you are simply jealous. Don't let them bother you :)

I had to work the entire time I was enrolled in school. I was busy 7 days a week, but it's completely doable. Actually, I enjoyed working while I was in nursing school. It was a nice escape.

I just started NS this semester and I will be working F-Su overnite 12 hr shift. I work at a group home so I can sleep and study while they are sleep. And they dont bother me at all anyways. So hopefully I can make it through doing this.

what's working at a group home like? are they elderly?

Its doable...I worked FT at a local hospital as an aid and went to school FT.....woud I recommanan it? NO But not everyone has that luxury of not having have to work :)

Good luck
