Why so negative ?

Hi everyone,

I have been reading this forum for months now and do enjoy it most of the time.

I do however notice that that the negative posts far out weight the positive ones. Some of the stories you read make you want to take an extra dose of Zoloft and see if World War 3 is already in progress.

Yes, Nursing is a hard job, Employers are mostly evil, Coworkers will eat their own young, Patients are all a pain in the ...,.

Seriously now, there has to be some good things abut nursing, I happen to love it, did so when I was a LPN and still do being a RN, not that my work has changed since I became a RN two years ago.

My favorite part of nursing is actually making a difference in the life of my patient and their family, seeing them recover from what seemed to be curtain doom ( I work in ICU). What makes you feel great about nursing ?

It doesn't seem to matter what line of work people do; it seems to be human nature to chronically complain about one's work.

You've hit the nail on the head,Michael, that's what we all enjoy about nursing and i guess that if that was all we did we would be the happiest workers on Earth! The trouble is we probably all have an idealistic view of nursing and when finances, budgets and plain old nasty colleagues get in the way it sours our view of the job and makes us unhappy.Nurses are human too!we are volatile but must keep ourselves calm and professional at work but when we give vent,as on here ,we let rip to make ourselves feel better and to know that we are supported by other nurses,we are passionate about the job but all sorts of constraints frustrate us.Give us one-to-one with a patient and we are as happy as pigs in muck that's what makes nurses happy!

I think the reason most of it is negative is because it's an oppurtunity to vent. In many settings, such as my own even positive feedback is taken as a bad attitude. One in which you can be fired for even if your a great nurse. Oh, by the way, WWIII has already started!

To whom can I vent about this stuff except youse guys?

Chronically complaining about work has nothing to do with it for some people.

For some people, they could have a rotten day at work, rotten job, rotten co-worker, etc. and they've held their feelings in all day, and then they finally spill/vent here. It's therapeutic, you feel better afterwards, people give their perspectives on the situation, and that person may be able to go into work with a new look at things, or a solution to the problem.

Amen bro

I think it is nice to be able to vent to others that know what you are talking about or going through. We empathize more and where necessary give advice and support

if you complain at work it can hurt others feelings without really doing any good..if you complain here you can get unbiased feedback on whether you are just having a bad hair day or whether you have a legit beef and different ways of handling it

and some days are just better than others, some days you get up to whiny children, difficult spouse, you go to work to find that best worker has called in, the boss is in the thros of possible shakeup and is worried about job and taking it out on YOU, your feet hurt, the patients are either in crisis or in a race with all the other paitents to see who can complain the most, the oncoming nurse is late so you have to stay to give report, when you finally get off your car won't start, you get home no one has started dinner or a load of clothes and the dog has decided to give up being house broke

the next day at least one of those things will be better

I agree with the others, this is a place to get help/vent with work problems on a wider scale, so people post what is bothering them...I know I have gotten support when I have been worried about something...might seem 'negative', but it has been a real help to me.

I don't think it's accurate to say that most jobs are as bad as nursing. Nursing is physically and emotionally unhealthy. Also, nurses tolerate a lot of verbal abuse from physicians.... stuff that would never be tolerated in other career fields. Also, most other careers do not have patient lives on the line. The worst thing that can happen in most careers is that you screw up and get fired. The worst thing that can happen in nursing is that you screw up and your patient dies.

Nurses endure unhealthy levels of stress which has long term health consequences. Many nurses also damage their back and other parts of their body. Even if you enjoy nursing, you are still engaging in an unhealthy activity.

Just remember that most nurses work for the money, but health is more important than money. Also, you only live once, so it is horrible to work a job you hate for your whole lifetime.

Unless you are surrounded by medical people, your loved ones do not really understand what you do all day. Fellow medical personnel really can understand the responsibility the work entails. Most jobs you can occasionally "coast" through on a day you are feeling a little off. In nursing you can't.

I feel that it is a good opportunity to vent here because it is a supportive and mostly non-judgemental environment. The support here is from others who are going through the same thing and/or will encounter the same or similar problem in the future. Most workers in the healthcare field in general are sensitive and need to vent..I mean who wants to keep all of those feelings inside..not many! We help others all day long and for once we have the opportunity to talk to others in the same profession about positve and negative experiences...that's good!
