Who's Paying????

Nurses and PICC nurses!

Obviously it is a pain when a patient pulls their line. It adds stress, time, and cost to our jobs. Just curious... when a patient pulls an IV under your care, who is paying for it in your case? Who is paying for the extra cost and supplies? Is it you? Is it the patient, insurance, your hospital? I wanted to see how different hospitals compare the ways in which extra costs are taken care of!

I would really appreciate any input!! Thank you

It depend on the exact reason for the extra costs. In the example you gave it is usually the insurance or payer. Patients that pull lines often do it because they are confused due to a variety of medical reasons. I often see confused patents pull out their peripherals because they are painful due to a phlebitis that was missed by the nurse. They may not have been able to communicate that information but they knew it hurt and went for it! I have even seen patients pull out lines or feign a problem or purposely create problems so they can get another for the attention.

If improper care or negligence occurs a bill or part of a bill can be contested and the bill or part of the bill can written off . Perhaps someone familiar with billing practices can chime in and offer some other ways this is handled.

The one and the same. Can't be a medical person. When the patient pulls out their IV it's because the patient is looney tunes and the unit is understaffed.And we don't give a rat's patooty who's paying for it.

And I would doubt that the OP is in medical device sales ... or would have a clue that the nurse who happens to be around when a patient inadvertently or purposely removes a "line" (although we have no idea if OP means a PIV, PICC, etc.) in no way, shape or form pays for the supplies to restore IV access. :sour:

Why are you so obsessed with IV's? Not only IV's, but specifically, who is paying for them.

And your OP referred to "our jobs," implying that you are a practicing clinician.
