What do you do and how long have you done it?

I have been on this forum for a long time and do not think that I have ever seen a thread like this posted, perhaps I am wrong, but I would really love to know what area of nursing each member works and how long they have worked there. If you are aspiring to another area of nursing or are in school, please share that as well.

I have been an RN for 4 years and was an LPN for 17 years. I work in open heart step down and a surgical recovery unit. I am applying to actually work in CVICU and should know in the next couple of months if I have been accepted. I am currently in school and hope to complete my FNP after graduating from UoP. Once I am done, I would like to teach as an adjunct professor as well as maintain my hand in the clinical environment. Once I am done with school, I am not sure if I will pursue more degrees .... I am anxious to have school behind me. Thats me :) Thanks for sharing.

PS - I have been told that my advar looks like an older version of Harry Potter with a moustache.

What a refreshing post, RN PATL!

I have been a Med/Surg LPN for 2 years. I now work part-time and go to school full-time in an LPN to ASN bridge program. I will graduate with my ASN in May of 2005. Before I was an LPN, I was a CNA for 3 years working in both LTC and home health care. I am trying to deciede now what area I would like to work in once I get out of school next year. I am definitely looking for something different, I don't want to stay in Med/Surg. The thought of ICU or ER scares me, Cardiac kind-of makes me nervous since the heart has never been my strong point, and Ortho, OR, and Neuro bore me. I know more about what I don't want to do than what I DO want to do! LOL

Hopefully by the time I graduate I'll figure it out! If anyone has any suggestions of areas I could consider working, I'd love to hear about them!

If I were you, I would explore surgical nursing. Best of all the worlds of nursing, full of change and excitment. Good luck.

I have been a nurse for seven years. I did six months of med/surg and got out. I got the job of my dreams, postpartum, at what is known around here as, "The Baby Hospital". I stayed for five years, and four out of that five, I worked a second job. One job was doing home care Well Baby visits. The traveling was too much, so I went to work for my kids pediatrician. I worked there and at the hospital simultaneously until last April when I decided the bureaucracy at "the baby hospital" was driving me out. I got a second job at a Call Center last July, still there, and I am now working with another pediatrician within the same healthcare system as the Call Center. I hated leaving my childrens' pediatrician, but there were no benefits, so I had to switch.

I would love to work postpartum again, but I refuse to go back to the hospital I was at. My friends who are still there say the sh*t is even deeper now than it was last year when I left. Yikes!

Med/surg floor for 9months...(yikes!! - every new nurse should have med/surg experience). I did home health for 9yrs...I did Medicine ER in a level I trauma center for 2yrs. (loved it) Recently tried GI nursing for 5months (YUCK!!!). Now I am fixing to start orientation in Pediatric ICU. Im just trying to find my niche. I definitely love critical care..just havent figured out which one, yet.

Went directly to the ICU upon graduation, have been in the MRICU now for almost 10 months already!! Just recently got accepted to CRNA school for the class starting in fall 2006-- but I have to start taking prereqs this fall already!

Two years as an RN, BSN (no previous hospital experience) in our CCU (both medical and surgical cardiac patients). I really enjoy where I work...I like the patients, docs and staff...I just recently signed up with an agency to pick up some pre diem work but have only worked two shifts at a local ICU...I like that too, just had time to pick up more since our own unit has been short...

BRAVO!!!!! to you ..... I bet it feels wonderful to have the undergraduate degree behind you as you move on to the MSN! Congratulations. I am still plugging away. Had to take some time off, but plan to start back shortly.
