In reference to a previous comment.....you're not lying to the person who has dementia. It's called validation. You're meeting that person where they are in their world. There's no purpose served in arguing or challenging the beliefs of someone who has dementia.

Oh I agree completely--that's pretty much what my response was. :)

I found it on Google in 2005. I had been recently diagnosed with MS and booted out of my job. I was sad and lonesome being from another part of the country. I found friends and comfort. It's going to be 10 years here this year.

In 2012, I "liked" the Nurses Rock Facebook page, which often had links to allnurses articles. At the time, I had 10 years of LPN experience and was intrigued by the idea of connecting with other nurses. My first post was in response to a thread asking "Does Nursing Make You an Angry Person?" I have evolved from being an occasional participant to an allnurses addict, checking the boards several times a day! My most joyous post was on a thread started by RNsRWe last June, where I shared that I passed the NCLEX-RN!

I had to look up my first post. I often think of the journey my life has undergone since 1) deciding to become a nurse and 2) joining AN.

So much has changed in my life. I'm divorced and I'm a nurse!!!

My first post was in 2009, I'd just registered for prereqs and responded to another posters question managing prereqs while raising kids.

My first topic was on managing study time while taking care of children in 2010.

OK, I got curious and looked up my first post. It's kind of funny because other than the numbers, this is pretty much the same as current posts on the same topic...this thread was titled "what are you worth in pay?" and started on May 20, '01

Wow! Lively discussion, but no matter how you cut it health care staff(from nursing to dietary to housekeeping and laundry-we all keep the place running way more than the desk jockey administative staff)need to be recognized with better pay, decent benefits and tolerable staffing levels. Do I see us getting it any time soon? Unfortunately not. I've been working in a nursing home for 8 years, first as a CNA then as a Nurse Tech (I'm an RN student in my last year), and every time I think the staffing can't get any worse it does. The work load has increased incredibly and the pay has not kept up. Our highest paid floor RN is getting less than $17.00/hr. after 18 years with the company, new hires are getting around $15.00. The average cost per day to each resident is $140.00. That's over $51,000 a year each resident pays for what I know to be substandard care, and I don't care how much corporate screams "overhead costs and poor medicare compensation" I guarentee what the company pays it's vital staff is a small percentage of their net profit. We need to ask where the money is going if not to us.
