What would you have done?

Today I took my final in my psych 101 class. I was sitting next to this young guy who has sat next to me throughout the ENTIRE semester. Throughout the semester, I noticed that he was cheating on our quizzes -- which were graded on the honor system. Meaning, we took the quiz, the prof., read off the answers at the end and then we graded ourselves and had to announce our grades for her to record. This particular student would wait until the answers were announced, fill them in on his paper and then give himself a high grade -- anything from about a 90 - 100. I never said anything even though it was really starting to get on my nerves. I should also mention that this class is part of a distance learning class and we sit at stations which have computers with full internet access. So, as I said, today was the final and in the middle of me sitting there trying to write an intelligent essay regarding neuropsychology, after many hours of studying for this exam -- I see him on google looking up answers to our final! (I also noticed his eyes rolling over towards my paper a few times before this too) My blood started to boil. I finished my final (before him) and with my test I handed a note to the prof. and told her what he was doing. I realize that it is really his issue, his problem and if he chooses to cheat he will ultimately not learn very much and is likely just wasting his parents' $$$. It is what it is... but curious what would YOU have done?

    Ratted him out to the teacher right away. That's not ethical behavior, and people work hard to get into nursing school. Just one less person for competition. I'm ruthless like that though. Good for you for telling on him. When you're a nurse, it will be your ethical obligation and responsibility to report negiligent behavior.

    IDK if he is a NS because a lot of programs require that class...but I'm glad you told...stuff like that and people like that just really up set me...it seems like a lot of younger people in this generation (but nnot all) has no sense of work ethic....I'm only 21 and get pride from making my A's and B's on my own...I would feel terrible cheating my way through...

    IDK if he is a NS either --- as we have not spoken much. I agree with you said about some younger people these days; but certainly not all. :)

    Integrity in the nursing profession is vital! Cheating hurts the most important person of all and that is our patients. This student would not hesitate to forge documents and figures, that ultimately could really hurt someone. You did the right thing.

    How can you NOT notice when someone is glancing at you the entire time? yes I try to stay focused on my own work but when someone keeps flashing me the shifty eyes, I notice.

    To the OP I would have done the same thing. I work hard for the grades I earn and pay a lot of money out of my own pockets (not my parents) to have the opportunity to do so. If some immature twit wants to waste his parents money and a seat another (honorable) student could be filling i am gonna call him out on it.

    I am shocked how lax some of these programs are with tests. It's like inviting people to cheat. Crazy. I Can't imagine us ever having Internet access during our tests or self grading.

    In most schools, the student honor code requires you to report cheating if you see it.

    I would have left a note for the instructor the very first time I saw him cheat on a quiz... he shouldn't have been allowed to get away with it all semester long.

    I agree with everyone ratted him out we all study our hardest to be in Nursing School and this guy who clearly does not take it seriously will just fly by..I am glad you gave the note to the professor maybe he will think the next time he tries to pull that stunt..shame on him!!!

    It is a very close seating arrangement in this particular class -- I could not help but notice as it was sooooo obvious! :uhoh3:
