Weird Performance Evaluation

Corporate Refuse To Give Nurses Good Job Evaluations

Is there a new trend in nursing performance reviews in which we are personally rated for company performance? I was (on a 1-5 scale) given FOUR 1s, and I have never in my long career of nursing received anything below a 3. These were all corporate measures for the hospital and we were all (reportedly) individually given low marks. Things like LOS, employee retention, etc.

Are you all seeing such things in your annual evaluations?

This blows my mind. It seems incredibly stupid and counterproductive. One example of how attempting to measure something can drastically affect the data.

And it's the second year in a row they rated us on retention.

Of course, I'm curious how giving employees 1s on things they can't control will affect retention....?

The beatings will continue until morale improves!

I can't seem to find the edit button to add this to my previous post.

These tactics are and excuse to low ball raises.  They are also a defense against a wrongful termination lawsuit if they get rid of someone.

There are times in our nursing carreers when the best way to proceed is to vote with our feet.  When management doesn't care and won't change until the bottom line goes red what alternative do we have?  Why do nurses leave the bedside and leave nursing?  It is all about the working conditions.

This is a long term trend in acute Healthcare environments.  I was evaluated on hospital goals as a department director in the 80s...I had no authority over most of the variables that defined those goals.

I'm curious... does your job description mention any responsibility for employee retention or these other corporate goals?  (If you're a department manager it would make sense but I'm assuming from your reaction to this that you're in a staff nurse position?). If not then I fail to see how you can be held accountable for things that are not your responsibility.  You and your coworkers could fight this if you're being penalized for things outside your job description (and presumably pay grade!).  Word to the wise though, I wouldn't fight it alone as they'd just try to find a minor excuse to justify firing you.  Or alternately make life miserable until you quit.  But if you can get your coworkers on board (especially hospital wide), it will be much harder to dismiss your complaints.  Keep in mind the only reason corporations do these things is because they know they can get away with it.  They gamble on all the nurses grumbling amongst themselves but not actually doing anything.  Good luck and keep us posted!

This may be the same corporation that  was recently in the news for having roaches in one of their Florida hospitals in the OR.

Are you talking about this infamous and deplorable situation by chance?  Where the brave Chief of Staff, Neurosurgeon George Giannakopoulos, spoke up for safety and was even reelected by his peers, but the HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital Board kicked him out in retaliation!

While hospitals get to micromanage us, I think it is about time we called them out for their bad behavior and shared it with our fellow nurses, friends and family whether here or other nursing blogs and on facebook.  It is about time the tables are turned and they face public disgrace and government accountability for their misdeeds.  Let them be called to account!  Remember you can anonymously report an incident to CMS and they will investigate!

yes, I didn't wan't to call out HCA but it sounds like them.  I was a CMS surveyor for 12 years and I thank you for your post.
