UBC 2021

Hi guys super anxious right now considering this is the only school I applied for? but I was wondering if someone can maybe answer my question -

my supplemental deals more on personal experience - I talked heavily on challenges I faced in life/trauma and experience in general in terms of how that made me want to pursue nursing 

my supplemental also include a few non-health volunteer experience, work in retail, winning scholarships, expertise in statistical programs & lab work/introduction in my undergrad years however, there is still a heavy focus on personal experience 

I am now worried that if the school may prioritize nursing or health related volunteer experience over personal and non-health related volunteer experience in the supplemental?

I think EC’s is an arbitrary factor when adcoms porifice out through each student. While it may be beneficial to have some sort of health related experience, an important indicator is how you linked parallels with activity XYZ and nursing.

For instance, let’s say student A worked at hospital for a sheer amount of years and in their personal statement they deliberately wrote a detailed synopsis of their time there; greeting patients as they come in, providing emotional support to patients & their families, and working at the hospital gift shop etc. Now we have student B, student B doesn’t have the same amount of hours as student working in healthcare settings but let’s say student B was a student athlete. Instead of writing a detailed summary of their role as an athlete, student B chooses to write a story of their as an athlete and clearly delineates how being a student athlete has prepared to become a competent nurse. “Being a team captain for my schools rugby team taught me the value of teamwork and collaboration ... which I hope to carry as a nurse and collaborate with physicians and medical team members.”

So basically, you don’t need experience XYZ to get in rather it’s how you choose to find parallels with your experience and nursing.

Thank you so much for clarifying it, hopefully, I was able to make those parallels in my answer? because I was a little worried that my supplemental was slightly lacking a few  “experiences” that the admissions team may be looking for. 

Reading previous year’s forums, it looks like they don’t prefer one type of experience over another. I think what matters is that your supplemental application reflects your dedication and abilities. Hopefully we all make it to the other side!! 

It is a shame that UBC (and other nursing schools) don't open up more seats for students. With the nursing staff shortage I'm sure we would all find jobs once we graduated. Everyone here sounds like such great candidates; it'd be awesome if we could all get accepted!

its the same thing with medical schools (and doctor shortages especially in rural areas), since healthcare is free, the government has to pay for it. Unfortunately this means less seats, less nurses etc.

Unlike USA where its private and there is 20x more med/nursing schools.

Hey guys! I know you are all anxiously waiting to hear if you get accepted.  I was in your shoes last year at this time! Stay positive!! Just a few more days.  I'm really excited for you all and can't wait until they send the good news! Fingers crossed for your guys.  Good luck!!

From stalking previous forums, decisions tend to be released between 4-5pm PDT

I read in the UBC nursing facebook that there was exactly 860 applicants this year and apparently alot of people referenced the pandemic.
