tired cna first shift

I am willing to bet the farm that when you do, you will find that second shift has its own complaints with first and third. Make the best of all of it, and perhaps propose a "town meeting" to discuss. I recommend that you (or your nurse managers) get an experienced facilitator for this so it stays focused on solutions and doesn't disintegrate into a massive *****-fest.

We have had many in services on certain matters. Things just go back to the same old stuff. It gets very discouraging after six years in the same place. Would switch jobs but, I love my residents and they like the care I give.

When I worked in LTC I found evening shift(im assuming 2nd shift means afternoons/evenings) to be easier IF you have the same number of residents you are assigned to, but if they staff less and substantially increase the number of people you have to take care of then it pretty much cancels out and its not really any easier. Its also the less desirable time to be working, so that can be a drag, although not as bad as the NOC shift.

Alot of times I feel like I've been hit by a truck. I'm always tired I could sleep for a week. Anyone else feel this way.

Well I agree that I think that each shift has their own desirable aspects, and not so desirable aspects. I know a lot of those working 2nd shift said that sometimes it was a challenge getting everyone ready for bed. Many have sundowners which can be a lot of fun when you have a resident acting up, and you have 7 more people to get into bed before 9:00. Always remember that the grass always can look greener.. Untill you actually work a second shift or noc shift don't just assume that 1st shift has it the worst. Hope 2nd shift works out for you while in school...You might find it just as tiring when you in school for the day, then at 3:00 have to work a tiring 2nd shift and be up for school bright and early the next morning.

I've worked second before at another building. It may be different here. I'm just working Fri sat and sun. Not sure how that's going to work with my bf working second. Hope I have time to sleep and study. Getting scared I don't want to fail. I'm going to give it everything I've got though.

second shift is a piece of cake. ONE meal(not including snack) and when you are done with your showers, you just get the patient into his/her gown right out the shower. If you time yourself right, you can do all of your duties and still have an hour to sit and chart. Evenings was so laidback, I found it relaxing..... actually easiest best shift.

First shift= annoying management, lazy rehab staff who don't fathom ambulation OUT of bed is also their job(wont get anyone out of the bed even when they are just cleaned and dressed... want me to bring them down to their office), annoying at 1-230 a ******* admission comes in, annoying the clerk at the nurses station KNOWS DAMN WELL that someone is getting a room change but tells me when I am half way into my last wetchecks.

Second shift=easy! I actually love my showers and pace is so much slower

Third shift= having a STUPID amount of patients- just cause most in the bed doesn't mean its still not ridiculous giving me that much. Annoying coming to look at the assignment sheet and the nurses give me a billion vitals to do when they can do at least one. Chile I can get into this shift like no other.

I would never want to work first shift. Second is crazy enough. 12+ residents to change before dinner, dinner rush, then everyone wants to go to bed right after dinner, chair alarms going off because they get impatient and want to do it themselves because you are busy with someone else, no time for a dinner break EVER. I do this while going to nursing school so it's hard, even part time. I am going to labor pool as soon as school starts back up in a couple weeks. Oh and can I add that last semester with my rotating weekends, my luck that every weekend on duty was followed by a test on Monday in class. You really have to prioritize your study time, and I'm one who likes to spend the entire weekend pre-test doing review.

I've never understood these posts. Each shift has their own battles to fight. I work every shift at my ALF and the challenges are different, but the challenges exist. I've never understood shift wars in this line of work. Don't we have enough trouble without harping on our coworkers? Some workers are lazy and that stinks, but sometimes, it was just a busy, rotten shift with hardworking aides--and the next shift will complain either way.

You will always find time to study, especially if you're only working three days a week. We just do what we have to in order to make it through. I work 5-6 days per week and go to school full time. Where there's a will, there's a way. You'll have to start getting up early and going to bed late. You'll be tired at work, at school, at home. You will have to sacrifice a lot, but that's how you get it done. If it was easy, everyone would do it. Count your blessings; someone might be coveting what you currently have.

I really admire first-shift people because its really is the busiest shift. You have to get them up and washed for breakfast then pass out lunch, so not for me :/. I love 2nd shift. In my opinion, its the easiest. One meal, some showers then into bed. The only problem with 2nd shift is that you will go to bed later because when you come home you'll probably want to unwind for a bit then sleep. I usually fall asleep around 2-3:30 a.m.

......and when you go to 2nd shift, you will have "trouble" with the first and 3rd shift staff.

It is what it is and it will always be that way.

Yes, you are wasting your breath by complaining.

Just do your very best that you can with what you have.
