Taking A Poll for an Assignment

Hey guys, I know this question has probably been done way to many times, but I really wanted to just take a poll. Do you have liability insurance (if your a nurse) or do you plan on getting it (for student)? Could you just give me a yes or no and a short comment if you'd like? Then tell me whether your a student or a nurse. It would also be awesome if you told me where the best place to get ins. if you have. Just give me the info you feel comfortable about giving. I would be so grateful.:monkeydance:

Been a nurse almost five years. I do not have it. I have looked into what it costs et it is not a lot. Not sure why I have never taken the time to get a policy. When I was in nursing school, it was required but it was in with the cost of tuition so we did not actually get a policy on our own, the school had a place that had policies for all their students.

I'm a student and I have it.

It was recommended to me by a nurse that I drop it after I graduate. She said that the hospital has lots of money, and you are covered by their policy (as long as you don't violate your nurse practice act). So if you do something wrong that doesn't violate your nurse practice act, the person (or family of) is going to go after the hospital (since they have the money), not you. But if you have a $1,000,000 policy, they're going to come after you as well. And yes, your policy will cover it, but now you've got your name tied to the law suit.

Well, what if I do something that the hospital insurance won't cover me for? (Which, of course, I don't plan on doing, but you never know.) Then guess who they're going to go after. Me.

Hmm...let's look at my options:

1. Have everything taken from my family and me, but at least I don't have my name attached to a law suit...

or

2. My name is attached to a law suit, but at least I still have a home.

I think I'll take number 2.

This is exactly why I have it. I have heard too many times that the hospital covers things during the initial litigation. Once all is said and done, they come after you for not following policy, etc. etc. You can lose EVERYTHING. It's not expensive and could save you big time.

RN for 2 years, in the process of getting it. I'm also starting FNP school in the fall. I figure that for $90 a year, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Of course, once I get my FNP and start practicing, the cost increases to $1200 a year. Still worth it in my book.

I, too, have NSO (nursing service organization?).

What if my employer tries to throw ME under the bus? What if they decide that I am not covered by them for some reason? What if I do a good deed on the street and am sued (even if I did right, and am covered by good samaritan)?

YES I have insurance. I will always have insurance. I'm even looking into an umbrella policy. For that, i may have to switch to the company that does my house and cars, too.

Nope..I've been an LPN for 10 years, and my jobs here in Wisconsin have always covered me...

Hospital lawyers work for the hospitals, not for me. If the details of a lawsuit put me and the hospital on different sides of the fence, I want my OWN lawyer representing me, not one who's first loylty is to the facility. So, yep, have my own policy, though I don't advertise it.

Been a nurse almost 22 years; had it once many years ago but had to cut costs somewhere so dropped it and never renewed.

Thanks you guys. I was also wondering if you knew where I could find out online what area of nursing gets sued the most. Im thinking Emergency and L&D, but I need proof.

I'm checking out the http://www.nso.com/ website now...maybe worth checking into. I currently don't have any insurance but am thinking it probably is a good thing to have!
