Hi guys
I am an 'old timer' (20+ years) as an RN, mostly in Home Health, who would like to switch gears and become a school nurse. I do have a background in education (K-8 certification before becoming a nurse) but no peds background/ experience (other than a few developmental delay home care patients). Any advice as to how to get started and present myself as a good candidate for school nursing? I have been lurking on AN awhile and appreciate the humor, support and advice shared on this site. Thanks for reading!

You sound like a good candidate. Go to local school sites online and look to see if there are any available positions.
Good luck and let us know!

Many people have told me that subbing is the way to get your foot in the door. Unfortunately, it's not steady work, nor does it pay well. Also, you may have to sign up with multiple districts to get a decent amount of hours. Of course, that can give you more employment options in the long run.

You have varied experience and that will help a lot.

you need to inquire with your state to see what is needed for you to be a school nurse. Some states require that you have CSN with baccalaureate, some states want RNs, some are fine with LPNs. If your state does require the CSN, you may not need as many classes given your background, look into getting the state to audit your credits taken to see what counts and what you still need.

I also have 10+ years in Home Health before getting my SN position. I think with your years of experience plus your education background, you'd be sitting well for a job. I didn't have any peds experience either.
Thanks for the feedback. I do have my BSN which may or may not factor in. I live in SE NC and our local school district contracts with a company specializing in providing health care to schools ( nursing, ST, clinical social work etc). I have submitted a resume and received a call back, so we will see what happens! Have a blessed day!

My district hires both BSN and ADN- prepared nurses, they just must have at least 3 years of clinical experience. Most of my experience, prior to becoming a school nurse, was in mental health nursing, so I was worried that I might not be able to land a school nurse position. Lucky for me, my interviewers were impressed with my psych background. I think you'll be fine. Present yourself as an experienced home health nurse and project confidence! During my interview, I acknowledged that I wanted to do a different kind of nursing, that I was up to the challenge of trying something new, and that I was ready to leave mental health nursing for awhile. Let them know that you want it, and that you can and will be great!
