Shift work and dating

I like being a nurse but the hours make it so hard to meet somebody. I work every other weekend, nights and holidays. It seems as though every nurse I know who is married or in a relationship met their spouses prior to becoming a nurse or on the job (not possible for me). I am not super social and between my ft and prn hospital jobs, I just don't feel like I have time to meet someone especially with night shift.

I really want to have kids someday too.

Anyone else have this problem? Any tips?

I'm trying Match myself. Not entirely sure how it'll go. I've been on one date that went nowhere so far. I'm trying to go to the Match Events. My BFF and I are going to a zip lining one- even if I don't meet someone I'm hoping to have a good time and maybe meet some other awesome ladies. I'm also trying to go to more hiking and paddling meetup events through meetup.com. I've been a member of several groups for a couple years, but couldn't make it to a lot of events while in school. I've had a great time at all the events I have gone to though. I'm hoping to go camping and white rafting thus summer too.

My unit only has one male nurse, and I'm a fan of not sh**ing where you eat, so there's no way I'd ever want to start something up with a coworker.

Good Luck!! I had always thought about attending one of those back when I was on there but the timing never worked with my schedule. They always sounded fun.

My SO is a gamer, many years of mmorpgs, more casual gaming now. He holds a PhD in physics and has his own business. I know quite a few other gamers who hold advanced degrees and good jobs. Contrary to popular belief, video games can be beneficial to your intellectual abilities (decision making, fine motor skills..). Also, most of my gamer friends from high school were also very "nerdy" and focused on studying, with gaming as an outlet for stress.

I have been on night shift since the beginning of my career. I've met people online, but my current sweet heart is a fried of a friend (we weren't set up, we just saw each other over at our mutual friend's place several times and then stayed in touch via Facebook!)

We will have been together for 5 years in September!

Get an ED job and land yourself a firefighter or a police officer.

I used to meet dates at the place we picked to meet or a very public corner; they might have thought I was creepy, but I became very cautious after my last relationship; no one was going to take advantage of me!

However...my first date with my fiancé was tea at his house. :bag:

A good guy will not belittle you or make it about his comfort when you take measures to protect yourself.* That's not crazy (or creepy!), it's sensible.

*Some guys honestly don't know better because they don't live with the fear of assault that many women do. If they *don't get it* after an attempt at education, I have no time for them.

Yes, firefighters.

Modern arranged marriages.

I was very addicted to the first season of Married at First Sight. Some of those people's marriages worked out just fine.

If anything, as a guy in his early twenties, I felt that working the night shift as a RN left me awake at night on my days off with nothing else to do but go out and enjoy the nightlife. This is how I met my wife. Now that I'm married, shift work is not very conducive to starting a family which is why I'm attempting to go back to grad school prior to starting one! I've been doing shift work pretty much all throughout my twenties, and I'm hoping to have a relatively normal schedule when I hit my thirties!

im not saying their bad, to each his own. its all good. lots of countries do it the old way lol.

I'm getting married next month to someone I met on eharmony. I work 50% nights, and like others have said, it's a good way to see who's worth the effort. Sure, it's hard to date when you're switching between days and nights. But (at least for me) the guy who was worth keeping around figured out how to make it work despite the inconvenience.

I met both my husband and my ex- at work -- night shift in the ICU. My ex worked in the surgical unit down the hall from us, and after months of waving at the cute guy and silent elevator rides, he walked on over during a slow night and introduced himself. We went to breakfast the next morning. My DH and I worked in the same ICU for years . . . as soon as we were both single at the same time, we got together. I'd say don't completely give up on the idea of meeting someone at work. (As long as you know you can handle a breakup in a mature fashion.) You may not have any single male nurses in your unit, but you may meet an X-ray tech, pharmacist, PT or RT. Go out after breakfast with the gang -- you may meet someone who is out to breakfast with the SICU staff or the IT staff.
