Nursing Station Technician Salary-Fairvew
Hello! I'm interested in going through a HUC program and CNA program at Hennepin Technical College in the hopes of obtaining a Nursing Station Technician position in the Fairview system. I have worked as a volunteer at Woodwinds hospital but otherwise have no experience in the health care field. What kinds of other experiences could help me get such a position and how much would something like that pay? My ultimate goal is to finish school and become an RN, however I am taking the slow boat on that route and need to pay my way through school and support my family in the meantime. Any insights would be appreciated. :)

Maple Grove Hospital
Does anyone work or know anyone that works at the new hospital in Maple Grove? They always have tons of openings for nurses and it looked like they did even when other hospitals didn't have many openings. Is it a good place to work? I know they're non-union and from what I've heard about unions that isn't a horrible thing!?!? Just curious if anyone has any feedback on the hospital...thanks!

Back to school for BSN in Minneapolis. Need advice on starting prereqs.
As a second career, I am applying to nursing school from scratch...no prereqs done yet and only appying to St. Kate's post bacc BSN so far (I already have a BA in an unrelated field). Any current students or recent grads with suggestions on a plan B if I don't get into Saint Kate's? What route would you recommend for starting prereqs? How do you approach prereqs when all schools require slightly different courses? Should I pick one school, take my prereqs there in anticipation of applying to THAT school when they are complete? Should I get a CNA now? It feels a little daunting to tackle it all...

I don't have the CNA certificate or any of the pre reqs. I could use any advice on how to get this all started, should I just visit the schools, most of their online info is limited. Any advice would be great!!! Can I get pre reqs from any community or tech college or should I go to the same school?

U of M BSN Program Fall 2011
Hey anyone going crazy waiting for their admissions letter? I am so anxious! I know that they are supposed to be delivered early April but does anyone know a more specific date? I know last year they didn't send them out until late April due to an excess of applications. I hope that is not the case this year... Also for those who got accepted in years past is it as competitive as it feels? What do you believe gained you acceptance? Experience (CNA), great essays, GPA or more? I am just curious.

on line BSN program at Mankato
I hope someone out there can help me with info - I am looking to returning to school for my BSN, have been accepted to Bethel ~ have heard nothing but rave reviews & the class structure of 1 night a week is ideal however, the cost is somewhat daunting... then looked into Metro (much cheaper...) but it's turning into a whole "dog n pony" show with their application process - it seems very drawn out & that I may have to take 3 prerequisites before even getting into the cohort - a friend suggested Mankato - which she said was ALL online... is / has anyone taken part in Mankato's RN to BSN program ? is it truly all online or are there campus times involved ? any info would be much appreciated Thanks ! ?

Should I bring my resume right to the nursing manager?
Everything seems to be online now. Online submission seems to mean that the resume has to bypass either an automated computer system that decides if you're qualified (great, that's just perfect) and/or a job recruiter. When I got my LPN it was the proper thing to do to bring your resume right to the nursing manager- even if it was an online deal- in fact that's how I got my LPN job because I brought my resume right to the lady and she said that made an impression on her because she could put a face to the name, even though she still had me fill out an online deal. Earlier this summer right after I graduated, I brought my resume to a clinic that is affiliated with a major health care network here in the cities, I had applied online for the job, tried to call the recruiter to follow up, because I had no idea how to contact the manager directly. Well the manager was so nice, and she interviewed me right then and there and it (at least to my opinion) looked like I could very well get that job. Not so. I got a VERY angry call the next day from the recruiter who bawled me out and basically said "no, you are NOT being considered for this job, all resume's go through ME first and you had no right to bother our nurses and demand an interview and we're running a business..." her words. I guess she called the nursing manager too and gave her grief as well. I also had brought a resume in person to the hiring manager of another place, and called a few days later to follow up and got just a really curt and rude "yes, I have it here." And nothing more, she didn't even say good bye or anything when she pretty much hung up on me. SO, I'm getting a lot of people yelling at me saying "you don't have a job because you're not following up, and you need to send your resume directly to the manager..." These people aren't nurses, and so I understand they have no clue what is going on right now. But my question is, if I REALLY want to work somewhere, for example (true example actually) I really want to work at Regions, I have had great care there, and I have heard awesome things about it, and worked for Health Partners as an LPN, and know all about it. I really want to work there. If there's a position I really want- is it..."kosher" anymore to go one step further and actually bring a hard copy of the resume to the manager? Or is this going to irk them, or irk the recruiters and just make me look like a pushy jerk? For the record- I did NOT "demand" an interview- LOL! I wasn't expecting anything other than a handshake and an "I'll keep it on file..."

Start a Free "clinic"?
If I wanted to start doing very rudimentary health assessments for the homeless ( once a week or so out of my church's St Vincent De Paul) anyone know of any reason why my RN license would not cover that? This is a very new idea, conceived less then 12 hours ago...eventually I will find a physician in my congregation to work with too, but as of last night I have met a psychologist in my congergation too who wants to help out with mental health needs, and I'm pretty excited about it....obviously I will contact the state BON too, but I wanted to bonce the idea off of folks here too... thanks for your time!

Got cupcakes, a new badge but can't call myself a RN?
For the past 15 years I have been working at a clinic as a LPN. I went back to school at the request of my site coordinator in anticipation of a newly created job in the same clinic. Long story short..funds dried up and the new position is going to be staffed with current LPN's/CMA's ..now I'm a RN looking for a job, still working in the clinic LPN position, for LPN pay. I'm fine with that for now, as it has only been a few days, but here's the question... I went and got a new RN name badge, went to the clinic and requested a change for my signature in our electronic medical record and was told because I was hired as a LPN, they would not change my signature unless I was employed as a RN. Can I keep signing my name LPN if I'm a RN? I was told I could not repersent myself as a RN as I was still in a LPN position. I went to the BON website and searched thorough the statues, boy is there alot of them, can't find anything. I would think I'd have to sign RN regardless? Any one had this happen or have any idea's. The gals at work got me cupcakes..I got a new badge..but I can't call myself a RN. Mishelle

Minnesota Hospital Setting for a CNA in School
Hey everyone. I am currently a pre-nursing student enrolled in a community college and plan to apply for nursing the program this Jan. I am also a newly registered CNA and I am looking to get into a hospital setting as apposed to an LTC, mostly as a foot in the door for after I get my ASN but also for the experience I will gain. I understand that it's difficult to get into a hospital without any experience, however I typically go for what ever my goals are first. Any suggestions for me. For example, specific hospitals that might be more understanding than others, or even specific hospitals that you've worked at that you absolutely loved working at? Thank you so much for your time. -E

Pre-nursing job advice needed
Hello! A little background: I was recently accepted to a nursing program for people who already have degrees in other fields. I currently work as a medical transcriptionist for a big healthcare system in the area. Obviously there is no patient contact involved, but I also have been here for 5 years and have a good relationship with my supervisor and knowledge of the EMR and am familiar with our hospital, etc. I'm still a couple of years out from my job search, but I've been contemplating if it would be worth my while to leave my job at the hospital to get some hours in an actual patient care setting after getting my CNA. It would probably be a dock in pay, which is not a huge deal, but I would also be leaving a health system/several hospitals I would ultimately love to work at. I'm wondering if leaving transcription or staying in transcription will make it harder or easier to find a nursing job down the road. I hear so many different things...its patient care experience, its who you know, etc. I would hate to leave the hospital if being a hospital employee would make me a stronger candidate (obviously I would be a cheaper candidate since I wouldn't need to be hired again). Would working as a HUC make me a stronger candidate? I'd just love to hear some thoughts on the subject. TIA!

Does it pay to know spanish?
Hello Nurses/Nursing Students, I have been thinking about learning a second language, Spanish specifically, and I was wondering if it would pay off in my nursing career. I am currently a student at St. Kate's right now getting my ADN. I am looking to improve my attractiveness in the job market and am wondering if this would make a difference. Also, will I make more knowing a second language? Thank you!

Where to look for a job?
Hi everyone! I am graduating in August with my BSN and am at a loss as to where to find jobs. I've posted on Monster and plan on applying at the local hospitals but otherwise I know of nowhere else? I will work in any setting (clinic, hospital, home) I just need a job that will give me experience in labor and delivery so that I can go on to get my DNP at the U of M. I've tried Craigslist but all that seems to be is a bunch of scams. I'm actually willing to take any job in Labor and Delivery, Women's Health, Pediatrics, Postpartum, etc...I just don't know where to start looking. Help! Thanks in advance :)

Tips for a New Grad Nurse wanting to work at the Mayo
Hi! I am about to graduate with my BSN and I have always wanted to work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Does anyone know if the Mayo have specific times in which they hire new grad's? I am in Colorado and almost every hospital here only hires new grads at specific times. I was told I should try and schedule a "perspective employee tour" I have never heard of this, does anyone have any information or know a person or department I could contact there? I am also on the fence about taking the NCLEX in Colorado with familiar faces or taking it in Minnesota where I want to work, does anyone have any advice? Thank you!

Mayo Clinic Reality
I work for a very large healthcare system in Utah and I am very disappointed in the career support of nursing in this healthcare system. I am looking for a place to have a career for a long time.. I want to know the reality of working for the Mayo Clinic, I watched the Mayo Clinic nursing recruitment video and I am wondering how much is true... Do the patients actually come first, meaning is their adequate staff to provide hight quality safe care? Do the nurses have a voice, do the nurses receive support, Do the nurses actually have tech support? Are the nurses actually able to practice nursing as we were taught in school? Do we have time to engage in evidence based nursing etc?? Does the Mayo Clinic send out yearly surveys to their staff? Sorry for all the questions but asking the above questions to recruiters you typically do not get honest detailed answers.

Would I be more likely to have a job if I were a BSN?
So here I am, 8 or so months from when I graduated with my ADN. I realize that I am also 39 weeks pregnant and so time wasn't really on my side to begin with and neither was the economy. But I have been accepted into Bethel's CAPS program to get my BSN. This is a MAJOR financial commitment. We took a hit when I started my ADN program, and were not expecting that the economy would stink the way it does now. I've been doing some research, and it seems like all the arrows are pointing to "get your BSN and you're more likely to get in the door". In fact that is what Health East is requiring in order to get into their new grad RN thingydoo (and probably requiring their potential RN's don't use words like "Thingydoo"!) I recall Childrens had the same requirement, and I understand that the VA Hospitals have been BSN only since 2005 (I read it somewhere...I could be wrong). So, I mean...I know trends come and go- when I was almost done with my LPN I was hearing that they were nixing LPN's for Medical Assistants... and now I'm hearing that not only are they NOT nixing LPN's they're making it harder to pass NCLEX PN, and making the degree an associate degree. I've heard the same thing about Health East pertaining to Allina and North Memorial as well as HCMC- BSN required (or proof of acceptance into said program by the time you start the new grad program). Now granted, in the long run I would HAVE to go back for my BSN- I want to be a nursing instructor some day. I'll need my Master's for that. The thing is, as I said, this is a big risk. I'd start the program in Feb 2011, about 4 weeks after I have the baby. We've been unemployed (hubby and I) for a LONG TIME. We're on EBT and Medical Assistance, if that tells you how bad off we are. I've thought "well, if I can't find an RN job, my LPN doesn't expire until 2012- but who will hire an LPN who is an RN? Wouldn't they assume "well, she's going to be held to a higher standard, so she needs more pay-?" or "when an RN job comes along she's going to ditch us?"- I know right now the economy stinks. I know there really isn't a nursing shortage, or if there is, the people making hiring declensions are in denial about it. SO, I would like to know, from an outside or other person's viewpoint, is this (rather risky) investment in my education going to give me some sort of leg up? Are the articles I'm reading true? To be fair, near the end of the ADN program I was in (Century, which was a wonderful program, I say) they were already telling us to prepare to go back. I had my preceptorship at St. Paul Children's, and all of the RN's there were BSN's, and those who weren't were in school to get that degree. Is this inevitable?

Northwestern Tech College
Hello, I am an LPN. I have about 1.5 yrs of exp, 7 months of which are fulltime. I work at a clinic and Chem health facility. I am having the hardest time getting into any of the traditional LPN-RN bridge programs here in the cities, I have applied to Inver, MCTC, to name a few. Im waiting to hear back from 2 others- It is just as competative as getting into any regular RN program. So Im thinking about applying to Northwestern Tech colloge I heard they have a online transition program and clinicals can be arranged. Does anyone know anything about this component of their program? ItS out of Bemidji,MN.

Med Surg Nurse with 20 years exp needs advice
Hi everyone, I am an RN with 20 years of experience planning a move to the Twin Cities in 2012 and in need of guidance. I am currently in a Charge Nurse position at the University of Colorado Hospital and in a BSN program. It looks like jobs are tight in MN and I really am looking for a position where I won't loose too much money in my move. Any advice on where to apply, I would love a Charge Nurse position and twelve hour days, what is the average hourly rate? I would be glad of any help you can give - Thanks
