Random Thoughts: School Nurses

Random Thoughts about School Nursing not juicy enough for their own topic start here!

My mantra lately: "Wash your HANDS, go back to CLASS and cover your COUGH!"

Or an ice pack! :roflmao:

Oh, I don't know if I'm ready for that! What do I do with the ice pack? Put it in a drink? What kind of drink? How does it help a papercut? Oh, this is so hard!!!!

LOVE IT!!!

Drugs? did they do a tox screen?

Recurring random thought: I so appreciate staff informing me, "you have a customer." Or, "there's someone in your clinic." If not for being told, I could easily not ever be aware they were there; just not be able to see them present in my clinic with out someone telling me they were there.

That drives me nuts, too! "You have a customer!" gets old really fast...

Today a teacher asked if he could be a nurse. I said sure and he replied that he "knows how to put on bandaids".

.... Um, yeah. Cuz that's all I do. Thanks for making me feel significant, buddy.

 What a jerky thing to say to you!!

Nutmegge, I am assuming they did a tox screen at the ER based on the report I gave to them. I was given a general "all labs were negative" statement from mom.

These kids have no qualms telling me about pooping. It's like I'm back in geriatrics. Are we all obsessed with pooping?

Inquiring minds want to know!!! How can a kid: 1. Rest and pick the poster on your wall for 30 minutes with out gagging. 2. Go back to class for 30 seconds. 3. make it to the bathroom and vomit nicely in the toilet with no mess. 4. Wait in the clinic for 2 hours and 48 minutes for their mom while picking at same poster and never so much as gag.

HMMMMMMMMMMMM........... these are the questions that haunt me!!

I have some who won't tell me if their lives depended on it. Then I let them call mom and then mom tells me. I have other students who barge in with 4 other students sitting in my office announce "I'm having diarrhea! Like 5 times. I got it on my pants"

ALL vomiting must be witnessed :)

Kids will be moaning, moaning, moaning in my office and run for the bathroom clutching their belly and then I call after them "If you throw up, don't flush it!" and voila! the feeling passes so suddenly.

Sorry- not my intent to leave you all in suspense with my trials and tribulations as a school nurse. THAT student got sent out via EMS. Unresponsive, breathing and pulse present, known history of status dramaticus. Although she was barely responding to a not-so-gentle sternal rub from me, yesterday.

We discovered some kinks that need to be ironed out with the Code Blue response team, but overall I was pretty happy with how my staff handled and responded to the situation.

Student is back at school today with a 24 hr (or maybe 2 week?- there is some confusion there which will be clarified today) heart monitor. All other tests were negative.

Maybe I should have just slapped a bandaid on her head yesterday to fix her!!

I am totally ripping off that line - status dramaticus!!! I love it!!! I had one of those today. Oooohhhh......whoooooaaaaa...... my belly....... oooohhhhhh"

I don't think a band-aid would have helped that unresponsive child. You should have pulled out the big guns:

Nurse Rachet! One of the old school macho gym teachers calls me that every single time he sees me.

Once a bunch of 9th grade girls were in the office and they thought he was calling me "ratchet" as in "She's so ratchet!"

I felt really old. They don't even know about One Flew Over...
