Question about Gateway CC's FTPN program and taking other classes

Published

I'm not sure if this question has been asked yet.

I am on the waiting list for the FTPN program at Gateway CC and I have one more co-req class to get through: Microbiology. Has anyone out there done the PN program AND another pre-req or co-req class?

Can it be done successfully? I am kind of nervous about trying it.

It can be done but if you can get it out of the way before starting I recommend it. First Block is pretty hard because there is such a change in the way you are used to learning and there is VERY little room to get the hang of it before its too late. If you want to move on to the RN I recommend having everything finished so you can concentrate on the nursing classes. High grades and high scores on things like the HESI-PN are what gets you into Block 3.

Wait, so do your grades in the co reqs have any bearing if you move onto Block 3? I thought they determined it on (of course space availability) but also just your HESI-PN score? So your grades in ALL the co-reqs matter?

I was wondering about c-reqs. I still have to take BIO 202, which I am taking in January, and Bio 205. Is 205 available anywhere else online besides at RIO? I took a class at Rio and hated it. I took another one at Phoenix College and another at South Mountain, and loved both of those. Has anyone taken 205 online at RIO or anywhere else?

Not the co-reqs... just your nursing classes and HESI-PN... they want successful students. But its the fact that taking a co-req at the same time takes away alot of reading time you will need in Block 1... I had extra time in Block 2 and could have taken it then,

Bio205 at Rio is just as bad as all the other Rio Sciences BTW. I hear Gateway has a really good 205 class! I hear they gear it with nursing students in mind.

I took CHM 130 and Bio 156 at Rio, and hated both. My prof never got back to me, didn't answer questions, and took forever to grade assignments or give any feedback. I also thought the midterm and final was a little challenging.

So how is BIO 205 different than the other two at RIO? If you took it at RIO and had a decent teacher for 205, would you mind sending me their name? Thanks!

I am just debating on whether or not I should try to take it at RIO or whether I should just wait until summer and take it in person. I am a teacher, so I have a hard time taking classes during the week now. Any advice or info would be appreciated. I am just having a hard time deciding. I know I probably won't start until fall, so I want to get 202 & 205 out of the way before I start. I'm taking 202 online at Phoenix College, and I really liked the 201 through Phoenix College, but they don't offer 205 online.

Do you need Micro to move into block 3? Any recommendations on taking the Micro course at a certain college or with a certain prof?

You do need micro. Just take during summer.

Teacher, I took 205 during the summer at Paradise Valley with -----, Awesome guy! His ex was a Nurse so he's aware of what you need to know.

Also one of my classmates in Gateway's LPN program took the accelerated 8 week A&P class during block 1 and works part time. It nearly killed her but she finished with a B in both classes. It's not easy but if your motivated it can be done

Miteacher, you said you had to take Bio 202. Take the class at South Mountain with ----. She is by FAR one of the best teachers I have had---just loved her. Very stress-less, helpful, bright and works with students who are intensely stressed. If you get a chance, take her!
