Not sure in California. Here in Florida, Nursing Assistants have to be certified.

As for orientation as an RN, normally it's a week in classroom and a week on the floor. You can always bargain for an extension if you feel you're not ready yet.

well, just got here from the philippines. Actually I've been living here in california for 4 months now. I have applied to take the Licensure exam for nurses here but thing is it's too long. I really wanna have a part time job preferably in our field of endeavor so that I'll also be oriented with the hospital setting here, as they say it is so different from the philippines. My question is can I ( new grad nurse ) qualify to apply as a nurse's aide or a caregiver maybe just for the meantime? And if not do you guys know any job also in the medical field that i can apply for? your reply would be much appreciated.thanks...

It is illegal to work (any job) w/ just a tourist visa and if you're already there for 4 months 'till now and still do not have the eligibility letter, you would prob. have to go home if you still don't have the letter stating that you passed. It takes 2-4 weeks for you to get that snail mail, even if you're in the US. Even if you get that letter stating that you passed before you're legal stay in the US expires you will still need some time to look for a petitioner or an attorney that will handle your case. That will take some time too. Add in the possible retrogression to boot. And, oh when you get the eligibility letter you will still need to look for an available slot in a pearson-vue testing center too and that is not automatic as well.

oh, i know how that feels.... i'm sure you're qualified, professionally, however, what matters is if you have the appropriate work authorization. if none, hang in there. get your nclex done first and all your paperwork by the law. you don't wanna mess up your record because it's your a career (and life ahead!) at stake. remember, good things come to those who wait.

you cannot work as a nurse assistant. because you need to have a certified nurse aide certificate for that. and even being an rn in the philippines does not qualify you to work as an aide. you gotta have a training in the local state were your located and be certified.normally red cross administer this exam. but in your case, you're on tourist visa, that will definitely won't allow you to work in the u.s. at all. you need a visa that will allow you to work in the u.s.

If you are on a tourist visa then you can not work here.
