  1. I am a newer registered nurse and I have been a licensed vocational nurse for several years six to be exact I have always found that my heart leans towards end-of-life and palliative care. I think every nurse has their Niche something that they like to do that gives them peace and comfort and joy. Death and dying seems to make a lot of people uncomfortable but it's such a rewarding experience as a nurse because we can bring peace and comfort not just to the patient but to the whole family it's a very intimate type of nursing. I love being a patient advocate. If you feel like that is where you would love to be then go there and try it out. The beauty about nursing is that there are so many different Avenues the possibilities are endless.
  2. Caring for my patients. When they need help I'm there for them. And when I get them what they need, get them comfortable, meet their needs, I feel like I did my job. And not just patients but their family members too. I love caring for people always have always will. Being a patient advocate.
  3. This is very stressful I couldn't imagine my deepest support on this forum I agree with letting the family be and if they want to contact you they can. Otherwise best to stay back. Try reaching out and talking with people about it. This will take time to move on.
  4. It takes time and practice. Main point to remember is how to treat the issue with acls. What degree heart block?? Does it matter? You will treat it the same either way so don't get caught up on specifics. Remember stable medicine unstable Edison
  5. Just be plain and simple I like my current hospital but this hospital offers more opportunity for advancement and is better aligned with my needs at this time.
  6. Best advice here. New grad straight into icu? That's a he'll of a lot of stress. Most people start on med surg or other use its to get basic experience and then go into specialty areas like icu, labor and delivery, nicu, dou, etc. I know I wouldn't feel comfy going into icu as a new grad, I graduated and got my license 3 weeks ago!

I am a new RN as of June 30th. I was an lvn for 7 years prior to my RN. I am currently being trained at my job in hospice as an RN case manager. I can't tell you enough how much I love seeing patients in their homes. After working at a skilled nursing facility for 6 years, I am worn out with med pass and assessment of 28 plus patients. I worked the last year in home health and hospice at night on call while in the RN program. I feel proficient in skills with catheters injections wounds post surgical hips knees shoulders even cabg drains JP nephrostomy tunes gallbladder drains Penrose etc IV central lines and IV meds are what I am weak in. In hospice I won't use these skills very often. So I am looking for part time or per diem work on the side using these skills. Any ideas on jobs I can look for? I tried 2 different hospitals for part time or per diem but they don't want a new grad in those positions. They want me full time and I simply don't want to leave my current job. The company I work for is amazing. Just need some ideas, maybe I'm not thinking outside the box!!
  9. Suck it up butter cup!!!! Lol just kidding I worked 36 hours a week, in lvn to rn bridge program, two kids ages 7 and 4. Did that for a whole year PLUS taking online classes so I averaged 19 to 22 units a semester....and I had to drive 180 mile round trip to class because it was the fastest program I could get into. I about lost my mind....my husband worked 40 hours a week. I had one kid in school, one in daycare and preschool combo 5 days a week. I had to hire a baby sitter to come early in the morning so I could leave in time for school. Then my husband picked up the kids. He pretty much did everything...laundry, cleaning, dishes, prepared lunches for the next day, and every other little thing. He wasn't happy about it but it worked. You just have to figure out a solid schedule and stick to a routine. It will be hobbit forming and the kids know what to expect as well and everyone's on the same page.
  10. No this is her experience just because it doesn't align with your beliefs doesn't discount her experiences. This is HER reflection of how nursing has impacted her. This shouldn't be offensive.
  11. What I have recently come to realize is that we are all entitled to have an opinion, but that opinion isn't right or wrong when it comes to a patient ls plan of care. Everyone has a right to make choices about their Healthcare and the choice and decisions they make are not right or wrong they are just choices the person feels is the best durning that time. One person might have a different direction with their health care verses another but one isn't better worse or right or wrong. We do not know all the ins and outs in people's lives. We aren't there to judge people's choices about their lives or healthcare, we are there to educated and inform patients of all possible outcomes so they can make the best decision that fits their needs.
  12. Interview for the acute care medsurg
  13. I did hear back June 30, I passed!! Yeah!!! I Have an item omw Thursday I hope they will hire me on for part time or per diem. Thereafter no way I'm leaving my current job it is too awesome
  14. I worked at a facility for 9 years 2 years towards end of my employment management was absolutely awful. They hired a bunch of new big wigs and everything in the facility went under. The moral was down census was low people were being overworked CNAs were being forced to work overtime lots of calls to the state it was pretty bad. Plus I was supposed to get wound certified promised by my administrator two years prior and it never happened. I finally took a leap of faith and left and found a new job. I found a company that believes in supporting their employees and believes inpatient care Above All Else. I forgot what it was like to work for a company and have co-workers with such love and compassion for nursing and for the patients and their families. I feel so blessed that I left and I feel blessed that I found this new job and a new company that completely rocks. Sometimes it's just a sign that it's time to move on.
  15. My husband and I worked without the same days off for I'd say at least 5 years! Then we got one day off together. He works and odd job delivering beer starts at 4 30am and off by 330! I had to work 12 hour shifts Fri sat sun for years, total bummer as he worked Tuesday through friday. I now.still work.Fri sat sun every other month noc 12 hours but im starting my new position this Wednesday in hospice working mon through Fri 9 to 5 weekends every 7 weeks or so. Holy moly! I think.working opposite is nice because daycare won't be an ssue and you won't have enough to call out sick because trust me, kids get sick alot! And eventually you both can have days off together. It's hard when two people in the family work odd hours. Lots of compromise.
  16. I took the exam June 17th and didn't hear back till june 30th! Almost 2 weeks! LVN took 3 weeks as well. My transcripts are what held up the wait. Talk about gut wrenching waiting that long, ugh. But I did the trick at 12 hours, 24, 48, and then 1 week and it was the good pop up. I haven't heard of it not working yet from anyone personally. California needs to jump on the quick results bandwagon, seriously. They can charge 20 dollars and make massive profit for the state!
  17. I am so happy that I passed the exam. The test left me feeling awkward. I did the LVN test 6 to 7 years ago and I felt like it was very hard. I did this test for RN and I felt like the test wasn't easy and the test wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I did the Kaplan review and the questions that are in Kaplan are really hard and I felt like the questions on the NCLEX were not as hard as the Kaplan questions. They Kaplan instructors stated that their questions are harder but it's to get us to critically think and prepare for the nclex. Pearson VUE trick...worked for me and my fellow classmates who tried. If I hear otherwise I'll let you know!
  18. I took mine June 17th and I'm still waiting. I know that the BRN didn't get school transcripts till june 3rd. So I'm guessing 4 weeks to process school transcripts. Then results will show online. Or mail will show pass or failure of the test. Mine stopped at 75 Sata were like 50% of the freaking test I swear I wanted to cry I feel like I failed but I felt that way about my lvn and passed so I'm holding onto hope. I live in CA too l
  19. I did this back in 2009, took nclex august 1 got results of passing august 21 and got license issued on webiste with number august 28 So 4 weeks
  20. I am a new RN, but an experienced LVN of almost 7 years. I had students as an LVN and it depended on the students themselves if the day was going to be good or bad. Some drove me nuts, they put pill bottles back wrong, misplaced meds, mars, but i tried to maintain profrssionalism and i did. The instructor was awesome and always there to asnwer questions. As a recent RN grad, i really came about working with my assigned RN's differently. I always said, "i am a 4th semester nursing student, lvn for 6 years, i can do all skills as long as your present, give all meds. Let me know what wors for you. Ill do all the charting and then u can sign it as well." Some days the nurses were so greatful i did all the work and charting other times it was so dam busy it turned into both if us tag teaming together to get tasks done and i understood the learning factor was on the backburner. You just have to flow with your day and respect that as a student you are entering their day and their patients care.we also worked 12 hour clinicals
  21. I took my NCLEX in CA one week ago. I know that the board got the school transcripts June 3rd. I tested on June 17th. I am dying for the results! How soon did it take for everyone to hear back? Did you apply for jobs before knowing you passed? I have a current job that I am going to stay in and transition from LVN to RN because my company rocks and I love working in patients homes :) I want to work per diem in the hospital to work on skills as a new RN. I applied for two positions but I am also wondering if I should have waited for my results before applying? Any input?
  22. I second that statement. I learned so much in LTC skilled nursing. Time management and assessment skills to the max. There were not RN on the floor, just LVN so we interpreted labs called docs did it all. I value my SNF experience :) And I love the elderly too :)
  23. I was luck in that the place I was working as a CNA at held a position for me an an LVN when I graduated. I currently am a new ADN graduate, and again, where I currently work as an LVN, they are holding an RN position for me as well. It takes a lot of foot work to get a job, you have to prove that they want you and you will be a positive attribute to their company. Cover letters, resume, and the after letter (after the interview) research the company and their mission statement and see if that statement is something that you can uphold, and if so bring that up in the interview. Also, make sure your references are professional ones and see if you can even get a letter of recommendation from your previous teachers from the program. All of these steps help improve your chances for hire.
